1982-10-03 Stone Pony (The), Asbury Park, NJ
| Dan French | I was in the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ and had one of the best evenings of my life for just a few dollars. During the second set of three by Cats On A Smooth Surface, Bruce Springsteen joined the band for an hour. Having last seen him at the end of the 1981 European 'River' tour leg looking skinny and jaundiced (shackled and drawn?) it was a revelation to see Bruce bursting with health and energy, looking more like a lifeguard after a summer of bar-hopping on the Shore. I had the chance to talk to him briefly before he played (he seemed highly amused that I'd travelled from England to be there), and he told me he'd heard Stevie was going to bring the Disciples of Soul to Europe. (A few days later I got home and that news was public.) Still one of my favorite Bruce shows, featuring the live debut of 'Open All Night' and the first full-length version of 'On The Prowl'. Thanks, Bruce! |
