Monday, March 27, 1972 is the date that I saw the Bruce Springsteen Band at the Back Door with approx. 9 other patrons. Of course I couldn't provide any kind of set list because at that time I had never heard any of his music. In fact, I was totally unaware of him until the fall of 1971. I was a college student at a small school in Kansas and I met a fellow longhair (Kevin Gray) from Richmond who spent 6 months raving about how great Bruce was. Of course I thought Kevin was full of s**t, Bruce's name was completely unknown in my part of the world (and remained that way until Greetings… was released). No way anybody that under-the-radar could be as incredible as Kevin claimed, so that's why we hitched back to his hometown on spring break, even though we didn't know whether or not he'd be playing while we were there. The gods smiled on us, fortunately… The only cover song they performed that I recognized was "Not Fade Away", a Stones-like version, if memory serves. And, yeah, the BSB lived up to Kevin's non-stop hype, I've always let him know how forever indebted I am for giving me the 'advance notice.' I 'm pretty certain my does not have anything from that specific show. He usually carried his camera everywhere but for some unknown reason he didn't have it with him that night. The reason he was able to pinpoint the date was because the day after that we went up to Maryland and saw the Beach Boys at the University of Maryland, and that date is documented on a Beach Boys concert website. I knew we had seen Bruce before the Beach Boys show, I just didn't remember it being one day before, although I did know for certain that the Back Door performance was NOT on the weekend. It Wasn't until the Born To Run tour in '75 that I got to see him live again, and he crawled off the stage and into my lap during the breakdown part of Spirit In The Night, so that made the 2nd 'never will forget' Springsteen memory in my lifetime.
