05.10.76 Santa Barbara, CA, intro to ´´It´s My Life´´
´´It´s a jungle out there…..(the music starts)….I grew up in this small town, it was about….. there´s 10,000 people, I guess….lived in this, uh….lived in this two-family house on this main street and…..my Mom, she worked, she was a secretary, she was worked downtown for some lawyer, my Pop, he was, uh…..he had lots of jobs, for a while he worked as a guard, he was a guard at the jail and he worked in a plastics´ factory, drove a truck for a while and uh ….he worked in this big rug-mill they had there till, till they closed it down, left everybody out of work…..and….I remember he always used to, ever since I was old enough to remember, he used to, nine o´clock every night, shut out all the lights in the house except for the T.V, my Mom´d sit in the frontroom with just the T.V on, he´d take a six-pack, he´d go sit in the kitchen, just drink beer, smoke cigarettes all night long….till long after we went to bed….´soon as I hit 16, I used to take off to New York as much as I could, looking around for some jobs out there, just hanging around out there with some people I´d met….till we kicked out for sitting around, they kicked us out of Port Authority and the cops called my Pop telling him where I was…..so….sometimes I´d get away for a couple of days, sometimes I´d stay away….for a week or so, but I always knew ´soon as the money ran out or ´soon as ….that I´d always have to go back home and everytime I went back home, he´d be sitting at that kitchen table in the dark waiting for me to come in…..and I´d come in and I´d stand there in that driveway….and he´d lock up the frontdoor so I couldn´t come in around the front…. and I´d look through that screendoor and I could see the light of his cigarette at the table…. and I´d slick my hair back real tight, tight as I could….and try to make it through the kitchen before he´d stop me and he´d wait and he´d wait till I hit that bottom step until he´d call my name to come back and sit down and talk to him for a while….we´d sit there in the dark for a long time saying nothing and when we started talking, I remember I could always hear his voice but I could never see his….I could never see his face….we´d start off talking about nothing too much, how things were going, what I was doing at school….pretty soon he was asking where I was getting my money from….what I thought I was doing with myself….we´d always end up fighting, screaming at each other, my mother´d be running in from the frontroom to try to keep us, keep us apart….and I´d always end up, I´d always end up running out the backdoor, screaming, telling him, telling him how it was my life and I could do what I wanted to do….´´
