Show features Bruce's earliest known cover of the Darlene Love-Phil Spector classic "A Fine Fine Girl". "Growin' Up" includes a version of the spaceman story featuring Ed Sciaky. "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" features a snippet of "Theme From Shaft" in the midsection. This gig has traditionally been noted in books as Springsteen's first-ever large indoor arena concert as a headliner - however, in reality the Springsteen show at Vets Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix on September 26 probably deserves that title. Audience tape and partial soundboard, three audience recording sources circulate. A soundboard recording of the encores was released on the CD boot ‘Arena Rock' (Palace), which is otherwise primarily the soundboard tape from August 22 show. A soundboard recording of "Growin' Up" also exists, probably sourced from Ed Sciaky's radio show. The complete audience recording is available on CDR as part of the Original Master Series. A second source was released as part of the 'DS Archives Volume Fourteen' (mjk5510), missing the last five songs. The third source is missing the first six songs and was recorded in the same seating section as Recorder 1 (mjk5510). Nearly fourteen minutes of semi-pro color film footage of excerpts of "Jungleland" and "Born To Run" from this show are in circulation and can be found (with rough soundboard audio) on the DVD ‘Bruce Springsteen: 8MM' (Brucevideos).

25.10.76 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ‘It’s My Life’:
‘‘….feels like Asbury Park….(?)…it’s gonna be a long show so you oughta sit down and relax or something …..(?)….(the long musical intro starts)…I grew up in a small town, was about…I lived…I lived in this two-family house….next door to this gas-station…I used to have, I used to have this roof just off my…..just off my bedroom and at night I used to….in summer I used to climb out the window, drag my matress out the window ….and sleep out on the roof ….and the station used to close up….gas-station used to close up about one in the morning….I can remember sleepin’out there and all night long there’d be all these different cats in their cats just pullin’in, sittin’for a while … meetin’somebody there….just pullin’out down the highway….just wonder where they was all going….and as soon as…soon as I …got older…soon as I hit 16, used to take off to New York so much as I could….(?)….back at home, my Mom, she….she used to work as a secretary downtown, she’d…sit in the frontroom with just the T.V on and watch….watch T.V all night till she fell asleep….get up and go to work again the next morning…and my Pop, he used to shut off all the lights in the house…and he’d just sit there….at the kitchen table….with a six-pack of beer….in the dark by himself, smoke cigarettes…just wait…like he was just waitin’for us kids to come home…so I used to stay up in the city just as long as I could till either….either I got stopped or someone’d check my I.D and call my Pop and send me home on the bus….I used to get on Lincoln bus….Lincoln bus all the time…and I walked through town a few times….and I walked through town again…pretty soon I’d be standing in my driveway…. and my Pop used to lock up the front door so we couldn’t go ‘round the front….and I’d stand there in the driveway and through the screen door, I could see… I could see the light….of his cigarette…and in the livingroom I could see the blue light of a T.V on…so I used to slick my hair back as tight as I could so he couldn’t tell how long it was….I’d get up on the porch and try to sneak in through the kitchen, make it to my room…and he’d wait….every night he’d wait till I hit the stairs…and he’d call my name to come back …and sit down with him at the table….and he’d start talkin’…I can remember I could always hear his voice….talkin’to me….sittin’there in the dark….I could never….I could never see his face……(the music builds up)….he’d start talkin’’bout nothing much at all….pretty soon he’d set around to asking what I thought I was doing with myself … where I been …and where I was gettin’my money from….What was gonna happen to me, I’d always end up telling him I didn’t care…..and we’d end up screaming at each other….my Mother’d be running in from the front room, trying to keep us from fighting with each other….I’d always end up running out the backdoor ….pullin’away, runnin’ out the backdoor, screamin’….tellin’him…tellin’him….tellin’him, tellin’him ….how it was my life and I was gonna do what I wanted to do….”
25.10.76 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ‘Thunder Road’:
”This is for Matty and anybody in his bike shop….sitting there with that 100 bucks in your pocket, old car, no place to go….wanting to get there in a hurry….this is for you…”
25.10.76 Philadelphia, PA, intro to '´She´s the One´
´´Way back….before TV and the radio….way back even before…..records…. rock´n´roll…. (?) the universe…..on the Seventh day…..when God was supposed to be resting…..they got it wrong…..He was building himself a car….it was a ´54 black (?)….four-on-the-floor….it was a 415…..(?)…and He drove it downtown….and He ran into a collision with the sun….and the Earth rolled out of the trunk….He saw Eve standing on the corner….said ´She's the one´….´´
25.10.76 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ‘Something in the Night’:
”This next song….this is….this is a new song…..will be on our next album….I’m working to get that out there, you know….it’s like, uh….all these cats goin’to studio with me….get it out there….this is , uh….this is a song…anybody in from Jersey? (lots of cheers)…I knew there was a lotta guys followin’ me when we came over to play! ….who’s from Philly? Who’s from Philly here? (crowd cheers)….right, good …. this …this is a song called ‘Something in the Night’, there’s a street back home…Kingsley Avenue and Ocean Avenue form this big circle…five guys been drivin’ that circle for about 10 years….so this is for them…it’s called ‘Something in the Night…..”
25.10.76 Philadelphia, PA, middle of ‘Growin’Up’:
”There I was…drivin’down this old dark road, right?….it’s late, three in the morning, right?…I’m with my girlfriend, right?…All of a sudden, you know, like I’m complainin’, I’m like real depressed this night, right, because….because I don’t have no money, this was about five, six years ago….that I didn’t have no money…and like I didn’t have nothing else, I was like seriously considering….doing something….
very…very…rash…like…like looking for work…..(?)…no…..said ‘My hands, my hands, that’s not my style’, right?….so…I’m driving down this dark old road….I used to take these girls down this road and like shut off the headlights and shut off all the lights in the care and try to scare ‘em, you know….and like I was getting down there and all of a sudden….from out of the sky….sssshhh!….came this big, shiny, silver thing, came shooting down…..sideswiped my car, I jammed on the brakes, I went (?) into this swamp, right?….right?…and like….and like….and I wake up and I look over into this field and there’s this, this big silver thing sitting there, you know, just glowing and humming, you know, like they do, you know?….and so, I got outta the car, right?….
told my girlfriend - I was trying to ….trying to impress her , told her not to worry…I know ….I told her….told her I know karate….(crowd cheers)…(?)…and so like I went over there and the door opened up….door opened up…..out came this guy in a silver jumpsuit…those big silver platform heels….and he started to lay this rap on me, you know….this weird…couldn’t understand, right?….couldn’t get what he was saying ….so he signals like this, like to bring out his interpreter….and out comes….Ed Sciaky!….now, Ed comes stumbling out of the flyin’saucer….first thing he asks me is if I have any food in the car!…I said ‘Ed, this is a flyin’saucer, this guy’s a spaceman here.’….he said ‘I can’t help it, man, I got abducted….two hours ago and I ain’t had a bite to eat since!’…..he was telling me, right, and so….and so I said ‘Ed, tell this cat….see if he’s got a towbar, he can tow me out of the mud’…so Ed somehow ….through his magical, mystical powers, lays this rap on this cat….gets into the spaceship….hooks up to my car….and tows me out of the mud….and just as we’re sittin’there….he says ‘It’s nice being here on Mars’….so we explain to him that this was not Mars, this is New Jersey (crowd cheers)….and they granted….and they granted me and Eddie ….they granted us one wish….he said…he pointed to Eddie and he asked him what he wanted …Ed said ‘Mister Spaceman….I wanna have my own radio show’….and like that, on the air the next day…..and he says ‘Ok, kid….what do you want, you got one wish ?’ ….I said…I thought real hard, thought about new transmission….new paint job… I said ‘Mister Spaceman, I wanna be…I wanna be….I wanna be…I wanna a rock’n’roll star!”
25.10.76 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ´Rosalita´
´´This is a song….we´re gonna do it for Philadelphia 'cause the first time we came down here a long time ago, we played this at the Main Point (?)….(?) called and said ´I hear you´ve been saying some shit about me too….I'm gonna kick his ass´ (laughs)…..(?) you best be out there, you best come backstage, gimme a chance to pop you in the face…..Rosie, come out !…."
25.10.76 Philadelphia, PA, intro to ‘The Promise’
”This is a song….this is a song from the new album….when it’s ready…this is called…
uh….stop throwin’them things around, will you?…..they might hit me, that’s why (chuckles)…..this is a song called…it’s called ‘The Promise’….”
