”1974, I was….I was walking by this movie theatre….and saw this poster in the window, it was a Robert Mitchum movie….it was about these moonshiners down south (cheers)….and uh….I took the title and I wrote this song….but I didn’t think there was ever like….a place that was like this, you know, or there was ever gonna be a place….and uh…me and Steve and two friends of ours, we drove….drove out to Reno, Nevada ‘bout last summer sometime….along the side of the road….there was this house that this….indian had built out of stuff he’d scavanged off the desert….and uh….out in front he had, uh….had a sign, a picture of Geronimo, over top it said ‘Landlord’….and a big white sign painted in blue that said…..’This is the land of peace, love, justice and no mercy’….and it pointed down this little dirt road , said ‘Thunder Road’……(no harmonica intro when there is supposed to be) I have my harmonica upside down (harmonica intro)….”
