“It was back in….´bout 1969….me and Steve….and Garry, we were working in this little club about a block off the beach in Asbury Park…..it was called the Student Prince….I remember one night we were sitting there, it was three o’clock in the morning….it was snowing outside…. we were feeling kind of low ´cause it was Christmas Eve…..and we had made this deal we said that we didn’t have no money so I, so I said … I wouldn’t get him a present if he didn’t get me a present….we said ´Nah, Steve I don’t believe in Santa Claus´….we were living in this place, 1610 6th Avenue….we were in the attic, we had two couches we slept on…..so we went home, climbed the stairs….saw the Christmas lights in everybody’s house, saw all the presents, saw all the Christmas trees….we didn’t even have no tree…..had no mistletoe, got no presents (?)….so….we went to sleep….that night we slept standing up with our guitars….. in case anybody came along, we’d be ready to sign…..anyway, it was about three in the morning, we heard this scratching up on the roof….we got up, we went to the window….and there was these two dudes trying to get in to steal our amplifiers and our guitars….we chase them away, went back to sleep….but about a half-hour later….we heard a noise again, we figured these guys’d come back (?) so we climbed up onto the roof…and sure enough there was somebody … hunkered down over by the chimney, I said ´Steve, them cats came back, man … you go that way, I go this way….get him, Steve! … Oh Shit! … we knocked out Santa Claus!….What are we gonna do now?, What’s he gonna do when he goes to your little sister’s house … Santa Claus … what if he wakes up and beats us to death with our Erector-set ? … Hey Santa! … you ok, man? … Ho!, Ho!, Ho!… (Santa: ‘Ho!, Ho!, Ho! Ho!) ”
