“Now listen…it’s gonna be, it’s gonna be a real long show tonight so you guys ought to sit down (crowd cheers) yes…this is, uh…this is called “Independence Day” (crowd cheers) and I need, I need a little quiet for this song, thank you…(intro music starts)…I grew up in this, this small town, it was only about 10,000 people and…and as I got older, I started looking around and…and I noticed that all the kids that I grew up with were all settling into, into the same old jobs that their, that their father held or that his father held…if they could get any jobs at all…and I tried to think what was the one thing that we had in common…what was it that, that put in a position where I was gonna live the same life that my old man lived and that he was living the same life that his father lived…and the main thing was that, was that I didn’t know enough…I didn’t know enough about the things and the forces that were in control of my life…’cause my old man worked in a plastics factory and his old man worked in a rug mill…and I could see there wasn’t gonna be any… things weren’t gonna change, it was gonna be the same…and I read this book…”The History of the United States”…and you find out, I found out how I ended up where I was and what happened to my old man and why, why his whole life he never, he never seemed to be able to get a hold of anything that made him feel like a human inside…and I was lucky because I heard, when I was fifteen I started hearing on the radio…and all it was was a promise…that promise is made to every person…on the planet, it’s just…in those old records you could hear, you could hear the promise of life…and it’s something that gets broken (?) every day…and it never came true for my old man and it never came true for his old man…and…I decided I was gonna have to…you have to fight as hard as you can to make it true for you…”
