Intro to “Independence Day”
“I remember when I…couldn’t wait till I got old enough to…to move out of my house…to get out on my own…and when I did, I was sure …I was sure that I was never gonna, never gonna miss the town I grew up in, I wasn’t gonna miss the people (?)(crowd cheers) and… I got out and I was 20 years old, 19 years old and I had it all made up in my mind how I was never, I was never gonna forgive my old man for being so wrong…and…for a long time…I kept thinking that way, I didn’t see my folks for a lot of years since they moved away …and when I finally went out to where they live out in California… and I was about, I guess, 28 (?) and I realized that not only was my old man wrong about me but in a lot of ways that I’d have, I’d been real wrong about him (crowd cheers) all the time when I was growing up I could never understand why he couldn’t understand the things that I was dreaming about or the things that I wanted or the way I thought things should be…I…later on I thought, I remembered I never, never once asked him what he was dreaming about and what he wanted…and it wasn’t that different from the things that (?)…that’s a bad mistake to make…”
Intro to “Johnny Bye Bye”
“Here’s a song that, that I wrote, I started writing, I guess, 19… shortly after Elvis Presley died (crowd cheers) I remember when I was a kid, one of the things I remember I was nine years old and my mother had on the Ed Sullivan Show at the time when they’d only shoot him from the waist up and…I sat in front of the TV and made my mother go out and rent me a guitar (?)(chuckles)(crowd cheers) but I quit it, I quit it in six months and I quit it because those days they used to teach you, first of all when you went to take guitar lessons, they would never teach you any rock and roll songs in 1959…they would only teach you standards or “Never on Sunday” (?)(plays a short riff) I still remember that but (chuckles) (?) like I wanted to learn “Twist and Shout” right now (crowd cheers)(?)…it was good when I was nine, I started, I started again when I was 17…this is a song…after I remember hearing it on the radio…that, uh…Elvis had died and I think that’s one of, one of the days when everybody remembers, remembers where they were… this is a song for him, this song (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “This Land Is Your Land”
“We just played over in Europe for two months (crowd cheers) and …I never really, except for being in Canada I never really went out of the States (?) and…there’s a lot, there’s just a lot, a lot to learn over there…uh…we played in Berlin and in West Germany…in Berlin you can still ride through town and see, see where they left some of the bombed out buildings from World War II and you see, uh…(?) if there’s one thing you get a chance to do, you should go, try and go over to Europe, get out of the States for a bit (crowd cheers) like things are very different back here…this is, uh…this is a song by Woody Guthrie, it’s a song (?)(crowd cheers)…”
After “Thunder Road”
“We’re gonna take a short break, then we’re gonna be back and we’re gonna rock you all night long, promise (crowd cheers)…”
Middle of “Rosalita”
“Ladies and gentlemen…I’d like to have your attention…for the most important part of tonight’s program (crowd cheers) the band introductions (crowd cheers) I guess I can start with the guy over on this side of the stage, sitting by that big thing we like to call “a piano”…most educated member of the band, went to high school, did everything, I’m talking about Professor Roy Bittan on the piano over there (crowd cheers) let’s hear it for higher education, folks (crowd cheers) now we got a man (?) the guitar, man’s poet of the soul, master of rock and roll, he brought you such great hits as “I Don’t Want to Go Home,” “Sweeter than Honey,” “This Time It’s for Real,” “Some Things Just Don’t Change,” “Daddy’s Come Home,” “Trapped Again,” I’m talking about the great Miami Steve Van Zandt (crowd cheers) let’s hear it for Miami (crowd cheers) now we got a man, what can I say?…he’s handsome, what can I say?… he’s intelligent, what can I say?…(?) no, I can’t say any of those things so let me just say on the bass guitar Mr. Garry W. Tallent (crowd cheers) give it up for the bass (crowd cheers) next we got a guy back here on the drums, from South Orange, New Jersey (crowd cheers) the Mighty Max Weinberg (crowd cheers) now over here we got a guy (?) he’s a great humanitarian, a great vegetarian, a great veterinarian, I’m talking about from Flemington, New Jersey, Phantom Dan Federici (crowd cheers) I don’t blame you for being excited (crowd cheers) now comes the hardest part …when I get to this part of the show tonight words fail me, I don’t know how to describe this man (crowd cheers) so…so in the tradition, in the tradition of all the great poets, the guy who said you’ve never seen a poem lovely as a tree and a rose by other name’d smell as sweet, I wanna say tonight I have written an original composition, it’s called “Poem for Clarence” (crowd cheers) the only way I can describe the man…”C” is for “Cool” (crowd cheers) no man would be a fool to dispute, “L” is for “Lean and mean and lord of the loop, baby” (crowd cheers) “A” is for the “Ace” of saxophone, “R” is because he’s a “Regular guy,” he just happens to be world renown (crowd cheers) “E” is for his “Everlasting love” which I hold so dear (crowd cheers) “N” is for “Nasty” – get wise and your face he will smear (crowd cheers) “C” is for the “C note” he’s owed me since last year (crowd cheers) and “E” is for “Everything else” – you put it all together, folks, and what’s that spell? (crowd: “Clarence”) what’s that spell? (crowd: “Clarence”) what’s that spell? (crowd: “Clarence”) Spotlight on the Big Man…”
Intro to “Jungleland”
“I would like to just take a second and thank everybody for coming down to the shows here in Philly (crowd cheers)(?) I wanna thank you all for the long-lasting support that you’ve shown me and the band, want you to know we appreciate it (crowd cheers)…”
