29.07.81 Cleveland, OH, intro to ´Johnny Bye Bye´
´´How´s things in Cleveland this summer ? (cheers)…this is a, this is a new song that, uh….I wrote while we were over in Europe….there´s uh, there´s certain things in life that everybody seems to, seems to mark the years by…like I remember where I was when I first saw Elvis Presley on TV and….I think everybody remembers where they were when, when John Kennedy got shot….I remember I was sitting at home when a friend called me on the phone and he told me that Elvis Presley had died….and for a long time that I thought, I thought a lot about it, how somebody that, that had won so much and had seemed so alive could….could end up losing so bad in the end….so here´s a song for Elvis, you gotta hold on to yourself….”

´´I remember when I first got out of the house, I was about, I had just turned 18….I was so glad ´cause I knew I was never gonna go back to that town that I grew up in, that I wasn´t gonna see…and I was sure that when I went out on my own, I wasn´t gonna miss my old friends or miss my folks at all….and for a long time I didn´t….and my folks moved out to California and I started to go out and visit ´em after a few years….and I realised that my father´d changed a lot since when we were living together…and I seemed to understand him a lot better and he seemed to understand me a lot better…but I was, was always putting off saying the things to him that I wanted to say, like I always thought ´I´ll call him tomorrow´ or ´I´ll be getting, going out there in a few months´….and then he got sick and went to hospital and I started thinking what would happen if, if I never had the chance to say to him the things that, that I had to say and he had to hear….people put off saying, saying these kinds of things to each other all the time….if you got, if you got friends or if you got folks at home…. it took me and my old man 30 years to be able to tell each other just that we, that we cared about each other and loved each other….so you shouldn´t wait too long….”

´´Ladies and gentlemen….now we come to the most important part of the show ….I´m talking about the band introductions…..I´d like to begin over here on the far left, your right of the stage ….a man behind the piano, when he plays the keys grown men fall in tears on their knees…good girls go bad and the bad girls….get worse….that´s right, I´m talking about the guy, the well-educated member of the band, ´Professor´ Roy Bittan on the piano….he´s good on that piano….then we got a man over here in the black shirt….the man who´s the poet of the soul, the master of rock´n´roll, he brought you such great hits as ´I Don´t Wanna Go Home´, ´Sweeter than Honey´, ´This Time It´s for Real, ´Some Things Just Don´t Change´, ´Daddy´s Come Home´, ´Trapped Again´, I´m talking about the great ´Miami´ Steve Van Zandt on the guitar….now we got a man on the bass, what can I say, can I say he´s good looking ? can I say he´s a (?) man ? can I say he´s a great humanitarian ? can I say he´s a great vetenarian ? no, I can´t say any of those things, let me just introduce to you from Neptune, New Jersey, Mr.Garry W.Tallent on the bass…. and now we´ve got a man last night who spent his first night in Cleveland as a married man ….that´s right, girls, read ´em and weep, I´m sorry, back on the drums from South Orange, New Jersey, ´The Mighty´ Max Weinberg….over on the organ, we´ve got a man from Flemington, New Jersey, the most mysterious member of the band, that´s why we call him ´The Phantom´, on the organ, ´Phantom´ Dan Federici….now…now comes the most difficult….I don´t blame you for being excited….now every time I get to this part of the show, bring it down a little bit, boys, it´s hard….I find I can´t find the words to describe this man (?)….in addition to all the great poets who said ´Nothing´s as lovely as a tree´, ´A rose by any other name would smell as sweet´, ´(?) girl in little red shoes´, in addition to all them great poets, tonight I´d like to read for you a little something I whipped during intermission, my poem for Clarence…..´C´ is for cool, which only a foolish man would dispute….´L´ is for lean and mean and (?)….´A´ is for the ace of the saxophone…. ´R´ is ´cause he´s a regular guy even though he´s world reknown….´E´ is for his everlasting love which I hold so dear…´N´ is for nasty ´cause if you get wise with him and your face he will smear….and ´C´ is for that C-note he´s owed me since last year….and ´E´ is for everything else, put that together and what´s that spell ? ….what´s that spell ? …. what´s that spell ?….Spotlight on the Big Man !….”
