26.10.84 Los Angeles, CA, intro to ´Reason to Believe´
´´This is a song about blind faith….blind faith´s a dangerous thing….”
26.10.84 Los Angeles, CA, intro to ´Highway Patrolman´
´´This is a song about….I guess blood ties, family and duty….and what happens when those things, when those things collide….”
26.10.84 Los Angeles, CA, intro to ´I´m Goin´Down´
´´Now, this song, this next song´s about, uh, fleetingness of love, you know, everybody…. kind of comes and goes pretty fast sometimes, you know how when you first meet somebody, you know, everything they do is wonderful and you know they come over, they look great all the time, you´re always telling ´em how beautiful they look….whatever they wanna do is fine, you know, ´What movie you wanna see ?´ ´Oh, I don´t care, honey, whatever movie you wanna see´….and like you always, before you go out, you´re taking that extra time, like, to try and get all dressed up for ´em, I remember like I had this one girlfriend, she used to like cologne, you know, I never wore cologne, I went down to the drugstore and, and it´s hard to buy cologne because anything you ask for sounds stupid, like, if you say ´Give me some Brut, will ya ?´….oh, and all ´em like macho names, you know, like ´Gimme some Chops….smell like a cowboy´ (chuckles) and uh, girls they do the same thing, they get all that perfume….can always tell what kind of date it´s gonna be if it´s a one, two or three perfume place, you know (chuckles)….they must think that that´s where your nose is gonna go (?)….but uh, anyway….you know you come back about six months later and the good times are all over, you know, it´s like….´Are you gonna take me out tonight or am I gonna have to sit around here all night long and look at your face ?´….why´s that happen ? (chuckles) why, God ? (chuckles)….”
26.10.84 Los Angeles, CA, intro to ´Glory Days´
´´Now, this is a song…..about old times….this is a song about how when them years creep up on you…..when them years start catching up to you…..now, some of us wear our old times better than others too….now, it´s easy to see that the Big Man has maintained his youthful beauty….there´s no doubt about it….here´s a song about how all things must pass….and in the end it ain´t nothing but glory days….”
26.10.84 Los Angeles, CA, intro to ´The Promised Land´
´´I guess, uh….this next song I wrote back in….guess it was 1978….and it was kind of, I guess, about believing that the place that we live in….could, uh….could be a better place than it is a lot of times….and tonight we got with us, during intermission, there´s some people out in the, out in the hall, they´re from the Steelworkers´ Oldtimers´ Foodbank and uh….what they do is they feed people, they distribute food to 5,000 families a month that´ve been affected by the plant closings you´ve had here over the past three years….you had a GM plant close, had the U.S.Steel plant close down, the Betlehem plant closed down and there´s a lot of people out there that….that are, that are hurting….so….if you get a chance…go out and check ´em out, they could use your support….they´re trying to make the place that you live a better and more decent place to live….”
26.10.84 Los Angeles, CA, intro to ´Shut Out the Light´
´´Thank you….back in, uh…..it was ´76….I read this book called ´Born on the Fourth of July´ ….and it was by, by a fella named Ron Kovic, who had just come back from Vietnam….and it was his story….so this is, uh, this is a song about coming home…..”
26.10.84 Los Angeles, CA, intro to ´No Surrender´
´´Thank you….this is uh….this is for a good friend that´s not here tonight, this is for Little Steven….he´s got, he´s got an album out called ´Voice of America´….if you get a chance, you ought to check it out, think you, think you´d like it….”
26.10.84 Los Angeles, CA, intro to ´Pink Cadillac´
”Now, take it easy, boys…..now, this is a song about the conflict….between worldly things and spiritual health……between desires of the flesh…..and spiritual ecstasy….it´s about temptation….now, everybody knows about temptation….everybody´s been tempted and everybody´s succumbed….you know ´Oh, I had to, oh, it just looked so good I couldn´t help myself´….now, where did all this begin ?….well, it began in the beginning in a place called the Garden of Eden….now, the Garden of Eden was originally believed to have been located in the Middle East but the latest theological studies have found out that its actual location was ten miles south of Jersey City off the New Jersey Turnpike….that´s why they call it the Garden State….now, understand, in the Garden of Eden , there were none of the accoutrements of modern living…..you didn’t have a house to live in, you didn´t have a bed, you didn´t have a little pillow that you could tuck under your head and go to sleep, you couldn´t drive out onto the highway and get a cheeseburger or go on down the La Cierga and get a fatburger when you wanted one….there was no sin…..there was no sex …. man lived in a state of innocence …..now when it comes to no sex, I prefer the state of guilt that I live in ….but before the tour, I decided to take a spiritual journey…..to the location of the Garden of Eden to see if I could find the answer to some of these questions….so I went and I found out that that spot is now occupied by Happy Dan’s Celebrity Used Car Lot….I walked in, the man said to me ‘Son…..you need a yellow convertible , a four-door DeVille with a Continental spare, wide chrome wheels, air-conditioning, automatic heat, afull fold-out bed in your backseat, eight-tack, eight-track tapedeck , TV and a phone so you can speak to your baby when you’re driving all alone’…I said ‘Sir, I´ve come for other things, I wanna know, I wanna know how did all this, how did all this conflict begin that pulls everybody apart all the time ´ and he said ‘Well, son, that’s easy….. you see because, because in the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth and the Lord sat back and said ‘This is good´ and then on the First day, He separated the light from the darkness and He called the light the day and He called the darkness the night…..and then on the Third day, He grew hungry so he created the cheeseburger and the Lord sat back and said ‘This is good’……and then on the Fourth day, He grew hot so He created air-conditioning and the Lord sat back and said ‘This is good’…. and then on the Fifth day, He got bored so He created rock and roll and the Lord sat back and said ´This is good´….and then the weekend was coming around and He wanted to go for a drive but he needed a highway so He created the L.A.Freeway….and the Lord sat back and said ‘What the fuck is this ?’….and on the Seventh day He needed some wheels and so He created the pink Cadillac……and the Lord sat back and said ‘This is wild’…..”
