“Thank you…this is, uh…when I was growing up, there was this house that stood out on the edge of town and, uh…sometimes at night my dad’d, you know, he’d be sitting at the kitchen table (?) he’d say “You wanna go for a ride?” we’d get in the car…and he’d always drive out by this house, I don’t know what, I don’t know what it meant to him but he’d sit there by the side of the road and smoke a cigarette and just look up at it…and sometimes me and my sister, there was this gate that went around and I’d run up to the gate and stare in and they always had somebody in there come down and chase you away…it was like a kids’ game we’d play…”

“Now, this song, this is a song about ancient history…it’s a song about nostalgia…nostalgia’s big!…everybody’s always thinking about way back when…when I start thinking about that stuff, I start thinking back to my teenage years, Big Man…I remember when I was like in high school…I used to…I used to have like this pool table in my bedroom…I did, I got it at Sears, cost 69 dollars 95 cents… and it just fit in my bedroom…it was around the same time that I was studying the guitar…so I would get like, my girlfriends would come over my house but my bedroom was right over the kitchen and my father would sit down in the kitchen and he could hear what was going on upstairs (crowd cheers) so…if he didn’t hear the guitar and if he didn’t hear the pool balls knocking together, he used to have a broom that he’d start slamming on the ceiling (chuckles)(crowd cheers) so he had to hear the guitar or the pool balls (chuckles) so I pulled the pool table over real close to the bed (chuckles) (crowd cheers) so I could kind of reach up and throw ‘em around once in a while (crowd cheers) when I was in high school I was only interested in two things…one was the guitar…and the other one was not pool (crowd cheers) now the guitar was the one that I became proficient at over the years…the other one…I’m still looking for some dedicated volunteers who wanna practice, practice, practice! (crowd cheers) I’m so lonely (crowd cheers) anyway, in the end it ain’t nothing but glory days (crowd cheers) all things must pass…”

“Big Man on the saxophone (crowd cheers) Nils Lofgren on lead guitar (crowd cheers)…thanks, this is, uh…I wrote this song…I guess probably ‘bout two years ago now and when I first wrote it, I thought I was writing about, about the town I grow up in and what had happened to it (?)…but in the end I guess it’s a song about, kind of about responsibility to the place that you live…and, uh, tonight when you go out during intermission, there’s some people out there trying to hold up their end of the responsibility, they’re from the Steelworkers’ Old-Timers’ Food Bank (crowd cheers) and, uh…what they do is they feed people, people that’ve been hit by the plant closings that you’ve had here over the past three years, you had the U.S. Steel plant close down, the General Motors’ plant, Bethlehem steel mill closed down and, uh…there’s people out there that, uh…they need, uh, they deserve a break so (crowd cheers) they can use, they can use all support you can give ‘em, the Steelworkers’ Old-Timers’ Food Bank…they’re working to make your hometown a better place to live (crowd cheers)…”

“Take it easy, boys…now, before the beginning of time…there was a tremendous battle between the forces of good and evil, now, on this side they had the Devil and he had his boys…then on this side they had the Lord and the Archangel Gabriel and he had his boys (crowd cheers) and when they came together, let me tell you they wrestled and the Devil, he was mean and he had some dirty tricks up his sleeve and he started to get the Lord and the archangels down…but with one sweep…of Gabriel’s sword they sent the Devil tumbling down to the darkness below (crowd cheers) now, this was the beginning of conflict between worldly things and spiritual health, between desires of the flesh (crowd cheers) and spiritual ecstasy…now, where did this all take place?…well, it happened in the Garden of Eden…now, the Garden of Eden was originally believed to have been located in Mesopotamia…but the latest theological studies have found out that its actual location was ten miles south of Jersey City, off the New Jersey Turnpike (crowd cheers) now, that’s why they call it the Garden State (crowd cheers) now, in the Garden of Eden, understand, there were none of the accoutrements of modern living…you know, you didn’t have no television you could watch at night, you didn’t have no little bed you could, you could crawl up into, you didn’t have no Laundromat you could go down and do your clothes – didn’t have no clothes! in the Garden of Eden there was no sin…there was no sex (some boos from the crowd) Man lived in a state of innocence…now, when it comes to no sex, I prefer the state of guilt that I live in (crowd cheers) but before this tour I made a spiritual journey to the location of the Garden of Eden, it’s now occupied by Happy Dan’s Celebrity Used Car Lot…and I went in and I said “Dan, I got some questions,” he says “Son, you need a yellow convertible, a four-door DeVille, a Continental spare, wide chrome wheels, air conditioning, automatic heat, a full fold-out bed in your backseat, 8-track tape deck, TV and a phone so you can speak to your baby when you’re driving all alone” (crowd cheers) I said “I’ll take two” (crowd cheers) but he said “Now, Son, understand, in the beginning there was the Garden of Eden, there was the Tree of Life, there was the Tree of Knowledge, the Lord said “Don’t mess with that Tree of Knowledge or there’s gonna be a rumble in the jungle!” (crowd cheers) but there was Adam, there was Eve, she was looking good (crowd cheers) there was an apple, there was sin and parked curbside was a getaway car (crowd cheers) a pink Cadillac (crowd cheers)…”

“Alright now…ok, ladies, gentlemen…children of all stages…citizens of Los Angeles (crowd cheers) it is now time for me to introduce the illustrious, industrious members of the E Street Band (crowd cheers) first…to my far left…we have the brains of the entire organization…the only member of the band with a complete high school diploma (crowd cheers) he don’t have it with him tonight but I promise he’s got one…a man that turned down a scholarship to Harvard University…where he was working on his PhD in unusual sexual practices…you may be familiar with his theory of promiscuity, his study of the lost tribes of Hoboken, ladies and gentlemen, the dedicated, the educated, the complicated, the sexually liberated, the heterosexual intellectual, Professor Roy Bittan on the piano (crowd cheers) next we got a lady…the lightest traveling woman in show business…the talented, the beautiful, alumni of Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, from Long Branch, New Jersey, Miss Patti Scialfa on vocals (crowd cheers) then we’ve got the man that puts the bass in your face, he brings you the thunder from down under, his mother was a Tallent, his father was a Tallent, his great grandfather was a great, grrrreat Tallent, on the bass guitar Mr. Garry W.
