Intro to "Seeds"
´´On the first part of our….American tour we were down in Texas….there was a lot of folks down there from up north….from Pittsburg and Detroit….that´d gone down to find work in the oil fields or in the oil refineries….when they got down there, the price of oil dropped….there was no jobs, no place to go….they´d end up sleeping in tents out on the side of the highway….or sleeping in their cars at night….and cops telling ´em to just move along….this is called ´Seeds´….”
Intro to "Atlantic City"
´´This is a song about…..blood money….in Atlantic City….”
Intro to "The River"
´´Thanks….how you doing out there tonight, alright ? (cheers)…good, oh….yeah, this is, uh….when I was a kid, my Pop had this trick that he used to play, play on me…he used to lock up the frontdoor at night so that I used to have to come in around the side….and he´d always be sitting there in the kitchen with the lights out waiting to see what time I was gonna come home….and uh….I remember I was, I was about 17 and I had, and I had a real long hair, it was like down to my shoulders….and he used to hate it, we used to fight about it all the time, you know…..and so I´d stand in the driveway at night and I´d look through the screendoor and I could just see the light of his cigarette and I´d tuck my hair down inside my coat, slick it back so it´d look short….I´d get up on the porch….I´d get through the screen door, I´d get through the kitchen….I´d get through the livingroom and my mom´d be sitting there sleeping on the couch with the TV on and I´d get my foot on that bottom step and just when I thought I was gonna make it, I´d hear from the kitchen: ´Bruuuce´ (chuckles)…yeah….he´d be calling me to come back and sit down with him…. and I´d come back and I´d sit across the table and we couldn´t ever see each other because it was dark….and sometimes we´d sit there for 10 or 15 minutes before we´d say anything….and then he´d always, he´d always (ends up stammering)….I knew I shouldn´t have dropped out of English when I was in high school (chuckles)….he´d always ask me the same, the same question, he´d always ask me what did I think I was doing with myself….and the worst part about it was I was never able to explain it to him….I couldn´t explain to him what was happening to me and I guess he couldn´t explain to me what was happening to him….I was too young at the time to understand how being out of a job affects you and how in turn it affects the whole family….and it wasn´t until, I guess, uh, I got quite a bit older when I was being able to understand what his life was about….but uh, anyway….this is a song about living in the shadow of a dream …”
Intro to "I´m Goin´Down"
´´Thanks….this is uh…..this is a song about relationships, uh….is there anybody with a new boyfriend or a new girlfriend out there tonight ? (cheers)…is anybody married out there ? (cheers)….both of you guys gonna know what this song is about because you know how it is when you first meet somebody, like everything they do is great and they look beautiful all the time and everything they say is so intelligent….you know if you´re gonna go out to the movies, it´s like, uh, ´Honey, what movie do you wanna go see ?´ ´Oh honey, I don´t care whatever you wanna go see´, you know….´I don´t care if we stay home tonight just as long as I´m with you´….and you tell ´em that you love ´em and they say ´Yeah, but, you know, you told that to your other girlfriends´ and you say ´Yeah but this time I really mean it´….making love all the time, two or three times a day….can´t keep away from each other….yeah, how sweet it is (chuckles) but then if you come back like about a year later, you know, it´s like ´Are we going out tonight or do I have to sit here and look at your face all night long ?´….´Are we, uh, are we gonna make love tonight or do we have to wait for the full moon again ?´….consulting Dr.Ruth and all that stuff, you know (chuckles) I don´t know, why´s that happen, I don´t know, anyway….this is uh, it all comes down to, uh….”
Intro to "Glory Days"
´´You sound good Indianapolis….Pavarotti lookout there, man, you´re tearing him up…. man, I gotta rest a minute though….you know, like, I´m getting old now….yeah….I´m 35 ….anybody else my age out there ? (cheers) hey, that´s not bad….oh…..now, the Big Man, he´s older than me….but he has some beauty secret, you know, he always maintains his youthful beauty….he looks good….not me….sometimes at night when I lay in bed….yeah, you see, I always sleep with my guitar….at first my wife didn´t like it but she got used to it….gotta take the whole package, you know….oh, anyway….this is a song for if you´re married, if you´ve got some kids out there….´cause in the end…..ain´t nothing but glory days….”
Intro to "My Hometown"
´´Thanks….oh, man, when I was growing up, I can always remember having kind of a love-hate-relationship with the place I was born…..when I was about 18, I can remember thinking I couldn´t wait to get out of there and uh…..I was lucky in that I got a chance to travel….but a funny thing happened, that when I got out, I´d always find myself going back all the time….it seems like the place that you, that you´re born and raised always stays with you…..always stays in your blood no matter where you go or what you become ….it´s like, we travel around, I find out that whenever I mention the name of the place, everybody cheers, I´ll show you, watch….Indianapolis (cheers) see, that works everytime (chuckles)….I got to thinking about it and I figured ´Well, people must cheer when they hear the name of their city because they have to be proud of where they come from…..and uh….if you´re proud of where you come from, it would make sense that you wanna do something to make it a better place and uh, tonight in the audience we´ve got some representatives from….(?) Foodbank of Indiana and from the Citizens´ Action Coalition of Indiana….and what a foodbank does is every year 20 percent of all the food that gets produced in the United States just gets wasted or thrown away….meanwhile in every city, there´s old folks whose social security checks don´t get ´em through the month, there´s people that been hit by unemployment, there´s single mothers trying to raise their kids on their own, there´s uh….there´s a lot of people that need some help….and a foodbank gets that food and gets it out to the agencies that serve those people….and…..what the, uh…. what the Citizens´ Action Coalition does is that´s a group of labor leaders and just everyday citizens who have come together to try and give you a bigger voice in the decisions that affect your lives, they work on voters´ registration, on trying to help clean up the toxic waste problems that you have here in Indiana….trying to help you achieve fair and affordable utility rates….and they´re out there, they´re out there every day and these are the people that are out there making some of the ideas that I´m singing about tonight real in people´s lives and without them what I´m doing up here is just a bunch of words….so they can use your help and they can use your assistance and tonight when you go out into the lobby there, you´ll see the names and the numbers, the phonenumbers of those organizations up there if you´re interested in taking them down and giving ´em a call, checking out what they´re about…. they´re here in Indianapolis and through Indiana trying to make it a better and fairer and more decent place to live for all of its citizens…. so this is your hometown so do something about it….”
Intro to "I´m on Fire"
´´I always remember growing up….my folks always working so hard…..I remember my mom always going down to the finance man….borrowing money for Christmas and getting it paid back just in time to borrow money for Easter….and getting it paid back just in time to borrow money for school….and on and on….always and always….but for some reason it never seemed like it….she never let on like it bothered her…but I always remember it bothered my dad…..he was sitting in the kitchen, thinking about everything we wasn´t ever gonna have….till he´d get me thinking like that too….and I´d start feeling angry….I remember laying up in bed at night….feeling like if something didn´t happen….I was just gonna….if something didn´t happen, someday I´d just….feeling like I was just gonna….like I was just….feeling like I was just….”
Intro to "Pink Cadillac"
´´Temptation !…do you know what I´m talking about ? (cheers)….good….because this is a song about….the conflict between worldly things and spiritual health….between desires of the flesh, and I´m talking about sexual desire…..and spiritual ecstasy….now, where did all this temptation and conflict begin ?….well, it began in the beginning in a place called the Garden of Eden….have you heard about it ? (cheers)….I´d like to introduce one of the world´s most foremost biblical scholars….to come out and give me a hand with….the lecture tonight….say hello to Handsome Jim McDuffy….now, the Garden of Eden was originally believed to have been located in Mesopotamia, somewhere in there….but the latest theological studies have found out that its actual location was….ten miles south of Jersey City, off the New Jersey Turnpike….that´s why they call it the Garden State back home….but now understand, in the Garden of Eden, there were none of the accoutrements of modern living….you couldn´t go home at night and put the little Pop-Tarts in the toaster and get the ham and cheese out of the icebox, make yourself a sandwich, jump in the sack with your baby and watch David Letterman….you couldn´t do that !….you couldn´t go out on to the highway and buy a cheeseburger if you wanted one….no Sir !….they didn´t have no washing machines, Laundromats (?)….man, in the Garden of Eden there was no sin…. there was no sex…..man lived in a state of innocence…..well, when it comes to no sex, I prefer the state of guilt that I constantly live in…..oh, in the Garden of Eden there were many wonderous things : was a Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, got everybody in trouble….there was a man, Adam, there was a woman, Eve and she looked so fine and when Adam kissed her, it was the first time that a man had ever kissed a woman…..and she had legs that were long and soft to the touch…..and when Adam touched her, it was the first time that a man had ever touched a woman…..and then she touched him…..and it was the first time that a woman had ever touched a man…..and old Adam, he got right up next to her and he said ´Oh, I love you, Evie´ and they went walking out into the green fields and they lay down….and when Adam….well, let´s just say it was the first time….but there was something else in the Garden of Eden on that day, old Satan came slithering up on his belly and somehow he turned their sweet love into a betrayal and sent them running down into the darkness below….but that´s alright because right here tonight on this backlot, for 99.95 and no money down, don´t worry if you´ve got bad credit, it´s good here, we´ll finance, we´ll take a chance on you, if you´ve got the nerve to ride, I´ve got the keys to the first….pink… Cadillac …”
Intro to "This Land Is Your Land"
´´Thanks, thank you….I´d like to take a minute and thank everybody for coming down to the show tonight, thank you very much….let you know we appreciate it….and uh….I know some of you guys wait a long time in line for tickets and things….I want you to know we appreciate that….but uh…..I´d like to do a song, this is, I guess, about the greatest song that´s ever been written about America….it´s by Woody Guthrie…. and, uh…..I guess what´s great about is it kind of, it gets right to the heart of the promise of what our country was supposed to be about….and uh….as we sit here tonight, with over 30 million people living at or below the poverty line, that´s a promise that´s eroding for many of our fellow citizens….and uh, I don´t know if you talk to, uh…..some of the steelworkers up in Gary, I don´t know if they think that this song is true any more….and the….steelworkers in East Los Angeles….or in the Monongahela Valley (?)….I don´t know if they believe this song is true any more….I´m not sure that it is but I know that it ought to be….that the only way that it´s gonna be true is if somehow….in some way….we try to make it so every day….but uh, anyway, you gotta be vigilant because with countries, just like with people, it´s easy to let the best of yourself slip away….so I´d like to do this for you wishing you all the longest life with the best of absolutely everything….”
