Audio recordings of "Tougher Than The Rest" and the solo acoustic "Born To Run" from this show were officially released on vinyl and CD EPs later that year; video footage of both songs was also included on the Video Anthology VHS/DVD. "Born To Run" was released on several CD singles without the spoken introduction. On the Video Anthology the intro is included.
Audience tape. Two recording sources circulate, the first is available on CD 'Across The Borderline… With The Boss' (Eagle) and from the master tapes (Two Of Us). The second is an incomplete tape that is missing "Tunnel Of Love" and also has several small cuts throughout the rest of the show. All missing parts are patched with the Eagle Records source. An alternate version of the "Tougher Than The Rest" video in circulation features a few different black-and-white intercuts from the L.A. Sports Arena stand, including footage of Bruce and Clarence kissing.
Intro to "All That Heaven Will Allow"
´´Anybody from New Jersey out there ? (cheers)….then who´s from California ? (cheers)…. the weather back east is not like this….this is nice….oh yeah, we get this kind of weather back, back east….when that spring finally hits, you know, you can kind of feel it down in your bones a little bit, people start pulling down the tops on their convertibles….girls leaving, leaving all their winter clothes home….you know, oh yeah….when the weather gets like this sometimes….I like to take a walk, take a walk in the park, see if any of my old friends are still around….hey, hey man, yo, alright, good to see you….how you doing ? you look good, man, you look good….what you been up to ?….yeah, yeah, I don´t know, you don´t ever call me, I never know what you do….you´ve been busy, what do you got, oh, I´ll check it out (chuckles) this is what´s happening ? what do we got here ?….oh, baby pictures of the little Big Man !….he looks good….he´s got a little suit, shades, a little saxophone….he´s what ? he´s three years old, just three years old, he´s got his own car and his own apartment already ….independent, independent, oh, he looks good…..almost as handsome as his daddy (chuckles)…man, I tell you remember when we, we used to sit on this bench….in 1975…. you see, you see, there was this big office building down on the corner and like every day about this time, all the girls would get out of work….and they used to have to walk right down this street….and so me and Clarence used to come down here, we´d have like baloney and cheese, you were pastrami and I was baloney and cheese….then we had a couple of bottles of beer….(?) a couple of bottles of beer and we´d bring some cards down and we´d play cards and wait for the girls to come out….they used to get out right about now….here they come, here they come….yeah, check….check her out….check the one with the green dress…. (chuckles)….oh man, remember how it feels like the first time you see that girl that you´re interested in come walking in the room, you know, and you´re trying to be at your best…. trying to introduce yourself to her, you know, you gotta act a lot nicer than you really are, you can´t….you can´t let your real self show till later….you gotta save that (chuckles)…. back in New Jersey, it feels, uh….(?) Ritchie, feels kind of like this….that´s nice….you know…. well, we used to stay out till 4 a.m, me and you….(?) where you going, where you going ?…. wait a minute, you just got here, what do you mean, you gotta go home for what ?….for dinner ? your kid, your wife´s waiting for you ?….we used to stay out till 4 a.m…..I gotta go to bed at 11.30 these days myself….she lets me watch ´The Honeymooners´ for half an hour ….then out go the lights….”
Intro to "Spare Parts"
´´How you doing out there, huh ? (cheers)….how´re you guys back there ? (cheers) …. danger zone…..there was, uh, this fella and this girl….and they met in a little, little bar….in a little town down along the coast….and he was kind of, he was kind of young….little reckless, little on the wild side and stuff….he, uh, was a house painter and she was a little older….and she really, she really fell for him….she was afraid but he was the kind of guy, he was sort of, sort of sweet-tempered and….gentle, knew a lot of jokes (chuckles)….and he kept her laughing and stuff…and uh….they moved into a little garage apartment about two blocks in off the beach in the wintertime….and things were going really, really well…..and, uh, she got pregnant….they were making plans to be married….and I guess maybe he was a little too young, he got scared…. he got scared and he took off…..but she never really let him go, she kept in her mind and she kept him in her heart….until he was like an old dream that wasn´t ever coming back….never gonna come true….and the world just takes, breaks your heart with it over and over again every day….because there comes a time when you gotta take the past and you gotta put it away….this is a song about a woman, a woman struggling to understand the value of her own individual existence…..and the value of the life of her child….trying to take her old dreams and to take her past….to leave it down and to find something new and beautiful and meaningful in her life now….”
Intro to "You Can Look"
´´This is a song dedicated to that great American pastime….not that one….that´s the old one ….I´m talking about shopping….people who are out there like (?) crazy….window shopping, that is….”
Intro to "I´m a Coward"
´´Is there anybody alive out there tonight ? (cheers)….is there anybody with the living, breathing spirit out there tonight ? (cheers)….that´s good….because….what I want to know is ….do we have rough, tough Californian men out there tonight ? (cheers)….I ain´t talking about you beach boys….do we have any macho men out there tonight ? (cheers)….because I’ve known men that would swim rivers….then climb mountains….then wrestle with the beasts of the jungle…that´s right….but there was one thing….that they was afraid of….there was one thing that when they got near it, they got so afraid, so filled with fear that they went running home to their mommies….do you wanna know what that one thing was ?….do you wanna know what that one thing was ?….that one thing was L….U…V, I’m talking about love, love scared ´em….and do we have any brave, heroic Californian women out there tonight ? (cheers)….do we have any courageous, sexy L.A.women out there tonight ? (cheers)….because, girls, I’m talking to you too….that´s right….I’ve known women that would jump from an airplane at 30,000 feet…that would date the horn section in this band…. but there was that one thing that they was always afraid of….love, love, love….now, I’m down here tonight because…..I´ve got something I´ve got to tell you….and what I want to say is….I have sinned !…and I don´t need no Jim Baker….I don´t need no Jimmy Swaggert to forgive me, those boys can kiss my ass….and Jerry Falwell, he can kiss my ass twice…. both cheeks….because I´m not afraid of man-made things….but what I´ve got to testify to is…. what I´ve got to confess to is…..that I’m a coward…..when it comes to love……”
Intro to "Part Man Part Monkey"
´´They had this TV-movie on about a month ago, it was about, uh….the guy they put on trial for….teaching evolution, it went kind of like this….”
Intro to "Born to Run"
´´This is a song I´ve been singing for about 15 years I guess….and uh, you know when, when we were starting to come out on the road this time….we knew we wanted to come out and sing, sing a new song….that´s my job….and uh, I kind of sat around, thought of things that would work….this is a song, I guess….it´s changed a lot over the years as I´ve sung it, it seemed to be able to open up….and sort of let the time in….when I wrote it, I was 24 years old….and I was sitting in my bedroom in Long Branch, New Jersey….when I think back it surprises me about how, how much I knew about what I wanted…..because the questions that I asked myself in this song, it seems like I´ve been trying to find the answers to ´em ever since….and uh, I guess when I wrote this song, I thought I was writing about a guy and a girl that wanted to run and keep on running, never come back….and that was a, that was a nice romantic idea….but, uh, I realised….that after I put all those people in all those cars, I was gonna have to figure out some place for ´em to go, you know….and I realised that, uh….in the end, I guess, that individual freedom….when it´s not connected to some sort of community or friends or the world outside, ends up feeling pretty meaningless….so, I guess that guy and that girl, they were out there looking for a connection….and I guess that´s what I´m doing here tonight….so, uh, this is a song about two people trying to find their way home….and I´d like to do it for you, dedicate it to you….just saying that this song´s kept me good company on my search and I hope it´s kept you good company on yours….”
Intro to "Rosalita"
´´Alright…my socks went down in my boots, I think….can´t stand that, that drives me crazy (chuckles)….now !….where was I ?…this is where we clear up the questions of the evening…. such as ´does the hero get the girl ?´….´does her mama come down and stop ´em ?´….´does her daddy come down and wring his neck ?´…´does he end up broke, busted and disgusted ?´ …these and other mysteries will now be revealed….”
End of "Dancing in the Dark"
´´Have you ever been lonely ?….so, so, so very lonely….that you were just living inside your head too much….that´s when I wanna reach out to somebody….that´s when I need a little help, baby….I wanna say….come on….come on now, sugar….´´
Middle of "Light of Day"
´´On the piano, Professor Roy Bittan….on the drums, the Mighty Max Weinberg….on the guitar and vocals, Miss Patti Scialfa…..on the guitar, the great Nils Lofgren…..on the bass, Mr.Garry W.Tallent….on the organ, Phantom Dan Federici….and just back from the Rainbow Room where they played with Frank Sinatra….just in from the Boom Boom Room where they played with Diane Ross….and just in from the men´s room where they got to play with themselves, the Horns of Love in the back now, baby….the sexiest men in New Jersey ….play it, boys….and last but not least…..the greatest man in the history of Western civilization….the handsomest man you have ever seen…..Clarence ´Big Man´ Clemons on the saxophone….´´
Intro to "Have Love Will Travel"
´´We ain´t come all the way from New Jersey to stop now….get on those things, man !….hit that thing, are you ready ? gimme that thing now, hit it….I want to tell you….is there anybody out there tonight that´s in a little bit of trouble maybe ?….is there anybody feeling a little downhearted out there ?….is there anybody, is there anybody that needs a little affection ? (cheers) a little attention ? (cheers) a little, a little, a little….(?)….because…..we came 3,000 miles from New Jersey and we didn´t come in no fancy rockstar airplane either….we drove for two weeks all the way to, to…..alright, alright, we did come in one of them fancy rockstar airplanes….but we thought about driving…..because we´re here to save you because…..our motto is Have Love Will Travel…..´´
Intro to "Sweet Soul Music"
´´I know what you´re thinking…..you´re thinking that I…..I must be getting tired about now, right ?….you think I might be wearing down a little bit about now, right ?….well, this is right about where I get my second wind…..(?) but I don´t know if you can stand it….I don´t think you can take it, baby….can you stand it ? (cheers) can you stand it ? (cheers) can you stand it ? (cheers) then I´ve got a question that I wanna ask you…..´´
Intro to "Raise Your Hand"
´´Somebody´s fucking with the clock back there…..are you talking to me ? (cheers) are you talking to me ? (cheers) I´ve worked my ass off all night, you better talk louder than that, baby….are you ready for some religious liberation ? (cheers) for some spiritual affirmation ? (cheers) for some sexual consummation ? (cheers) then just raise your hand one time….´´
