Intro to "Better Days"
“Good evening (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to "Local Hero"
“Good evening, how you feeling tonight? (crowd cheers)…(music starts)…there I was…”
Intro to "Lucky Town"
“Alright, let’s try it…ready, man?…alright…I have the guitar on… let’s get lucky now…”
Intro to "Dancing in the Dark"
“Yeah…this is, uh…so you feel like putting on a new face (chuckles) …”
Intro to "If I Should Fall Behind"
“Thank you, thanks…I wrote that song, uh, when I was going through a real bad time back in the late, late seventies (some people in the crowd: “Yeah”) remember those late seventies? (chuckles) but, uh…this next song I wrote when I was going through a real good time, good time (crowd cheers) I wrote this about a month, I guess about a month before my wedding, the second one (chuckles)(crowd cheers) and uh (chuckles)(crowd cheers) hey! I got it right, I got it right (chuckles) you gotta keep working on it, you know, but, uh…it’s funny, I guess, uh, I guess, you know, down fifteen years earlier I was writing about what was that one thing that, that you just can’t face, it’s a different thing for a lot of people, for me, I guess, uh…this next song is about that one thing that I couldn’t face…and uh…but, you know…I’ve been working on it and, uh, so, uh…yeah, it’s the hardest thing sometimes just to take one person and sit down and really, you know, look into their eyes and, and, uh…the song says it better than I’m saying (chuckles) so anyway…this is, uh…this is wishing you, uh, I guess not, not safe travel because it’s always a bumpy road but this is just hoping you get there (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to "57 Channels"
“It’s a real troubled, violent time back in the States right now…a month, just before we came out, you could see the whole city of Los Angeles on fire…there’s people…left abandoned in the inner cities, not given the modest respect that it takes to make sure your children are safe when they go to school or…to be able to find yourself a place as a husband…to be able to (?)…dark times, dark times, dark times…”
Intro to "My Hometown"
“Thank you, thank you…living proof…uh…(?)…this, uh, this next song, this is, it’s, I guess, uh…a song I wrote about ten years ago and uh…I was remembering back what it was like when…when, you know, my dad used to kind of put me in the car and drive me through town (crowd cheers) yeah…you know…and uh…it’s funny, I was reading something the other day, it said…that nothing you ever do for a child is wasted…and that’s true…we have any moms and pops out there tonight? (some cheers) that’s nice (chuckles) yeah, been working hard, I got a beautiful little girl, a beautiful little boy now – thank you, Patti (crowd cheers) I had the easy part (chuckles) and uh…you know, it’s, uh, it changes the way you think about everything, I guess, all the clichés, you know…all the clichés come true (chuckles) you find yourself doing things that your dad did and trying to stop doing things your dad did but I guess, uh, this song is about the legacy that we leave to our children and whether it’s in the world that we leave ‘em or whether it’s in what we leave ‘em in their spirits and in their hearts by being the kind of, you know, parents, mothers, fathers…this is, uh, I guess when you have kids, you know, you try to…try to get all the weak parts, you try to make all the weak parts of you strong for them…and uh… anyway, this is a song, uh…I guess I waited a long time to sing this song and have that last verse be real so (chuckles) I’m gonna dedicate this to your children (crowd cheers) my children (crowd cheers) all mothers and fathers…take care of those little babies (chuckles)…”
Intro to "Leap of Faith"
“Thank you, ladies and gentlemen…this next song is a very important song, the most important song of the night, I’m gonna tell you in front right now…because we’re here tonight with a sponsor (crowd sounds sort of surprised) that’s right! we’re here tonight with a sponsor – I ain’t talking about (?) ain’t selling you no sneakers, ain’t gonna be selling you no soda pop - although there are a few items out in the hall during intermission but I’m not gonna mention those right now either – what I’m talking to you tonight is that our sponsor here is love (crowd cheers) that’s right …we are brought to you by love tonight - now is anybody, has anybody ever gotten involved with love and had love grind them into the ground? (crowd cheers) just take them and like grind them right into the ground till they got nothing left? (crowd cheers) until they said “Man, love, love, love doesn’t exist!” (crowd cheers) love, there’s no such thing as love (crowd cheers) love (someone: “sucks”) love sucks – that’s right, there you go (?)(crowd cheers) oh, but there’s no room for cynicism here tonight because you can’t have love unless you have (crowd: “faith”) faith, that’s right (chuckles) you can’t have love unless you have faith…alright, so… now I’m gonna dedicate this to the lady that, uh…what can I say?… oh, besides being about love, faith and hope, this song lists a series of bizarre, ritualistic sexual acts (crowd cheers) that’s right, so listen close because this imagery is only thinly veiled (chuckles) and the real me shines through it (chuckles) (crowd cheers) this is for Patti, alright…”
Intro to "Man’s Job"
“Hey, Bobby…let’s get somebody down here who can really sing now (chuckles)…let’s do it…”
Middle of "Roll of the Dice"
“Oh, bring it down…bring it way, way down…’cause when it comes, it comes from way, way down now…it comes from where you don’t think you got nothing left…it comes way out of the darkness…where there ain’t no light…and there’s hope nowhere in sight…and you feel like you’ve lost yourself…bring it way down, it’s gotta be a lot darker than this…it’s gotta be a lot darker than this…much darker still…darker still…because when it comes, it comes way up out of the darkness…where all you wanna do is hide…you got no pride now…and no faith in yourself…you feel nothing but alone, lonely inside, nothing but alone (?) nothing but alone and you feel your soul crying…you can feel your soul crying…that’s when, that’s when you need a little help…because…it’s just a kiss away…it’s just a kiss away…that’s when it’s just a kiss away…a kiss away…oh, it’s just a kiss away…just a kiss away…that’s when it’s just a roll away…”
After "Roll of the Dice"
“Thank you (crowd cheers) the band – let me hear it for them (crowd cheers) we’re gonna be back in few minutes with some more entertainment so we’ll see you in a little while, ok? (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to "With Every Wish"
“Here’s, uh…this next song is kind of a fairytale…I was, uh, telling the folks the other night that…when you get…you get those little babies and read those kind of, you get back in touch with like all those books that you remember when you were a kid like “Mother Goose” (?) you know, I remember things that my grandmother said to me and, and, uh (someone yells “Bruuuce!”) that, that’s disgusting, you should cut that out (chuckles) but, uh, anyway, at night I read my kid these different fairytales, I got this book filled with them, some of them are kind of, they seem sort of frightening for a little two-year-old, you know, there’s like, uh, “Humpty Dumpty,” “Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a big fall, all the king’s horses, all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty together again”…that seems kind of tragic to me, that seems kind of, it’s too heavy for two years old (chuckles)(laughs from the crowd) then there’s “Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water, Jack fell down, broke his crown, Jill came tumbling after” – I know all about that one (chuckles) but, anyway, this is, uh…this is a fairytale for you (crowd cheers)…”
Middle of "Light of Day"
“Alright…did I hear a little train back there?…I need a train…I see a train coming down the track (crowd “woo-woos”) I said I see a train (crowd “woo-woos”) coming down the track (crowd “woo-woos”) yeah, it’s gonna take my baby and it ain’t gonna bring my baby back – one more (crowd “woo-woos”) I see a train (crowd “woo-woos”) coming down the line (crowd “woo-woos”) yeah, I see a train (crowd “woo-woos”) coming down the line (crowd “woo-woos”) yeah, it’s gonna take my baby and it ain’t gonna leave baby behind (crowd “woo-woos”) alright, come now…alright…wait a minute now…it’s coming one hundred miles, two hundred miles, three hundred miles, rolling down the track it’s coming four hundred miles, five hundred miles, six hundred miles, rolling down the track it’s coming seven hundred miles, eight hundred miles, nine hundred miles, rolling down the track it’s coming one thousand miles, twelve hundred miles, thirteen hundred miles, rolling down the track and then it come to a halt – tsssh…I started looking around to find out where I am…I’m a long, long way from home… I’m such a long, long way from home…I came all the way from the United States of America, thousands and thousands of miles (crowd cheers) I came here with a message tonight…I came to you with a message to bring to you people tonight (crowd cheers) we came through Stockholm (crowd cheers) we came through France (crowd cheers) we came through Italy (crowd cheers) we came through Germany (crowd cheers) now I’m right here in London, England with a message for you folks tonight (crowd cheers) do you wanna know? (crowd cheers) do you wanna know? (crowd cheers) do you wanna know what that message is? (crowd cheers) do you wanna know? (crowd cheers) do you wanna know? (crowd cheers) do you wanna know what that message is? (crowd cheers) if you wanna know, then say “Yay-yeah” (crowd: “Yay-yeah”)…
(…)(crowd cheers) Are you talking to me? (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to "Glory Days"
“Good Lord (crowd cheers) I think youse are about tiring me right out, shit! (chuckles) (crowd cheers)…
(…) Come on down, everybody…join the party…I wanna introduce to you…Miss Angel Rogers (crowd cheers) Miss Carol Dennis (crowd cheers) Cleo Kennedy (crowd cheers) Gia Giambotti (crowd cheers) Mr. Bobby King (crowd cheers) Shane Fontayne on the guitar (crowd cheers) Zak Alford on the drums (crowd cheers) Tommy Simms on the bass (crowd cheers) Miss Crystal Talifiero on the guitar (crowd cheers) and Pr-pr-prrr – the only member of the band with an incredible college diploma, Professor Roy Bittan (crowd cheers) that’s right…that’s right…are we ready, everybody?… because it’s about to happen right now…I know you think I’ve tired myself out with all this jumping around that I’ve been doing all night, right? (crowd cheers) I know what you’re thinking…”He ain’t been around in four years, let me see, he was 38 then, he’s 42 – that’s gotta be tiring the man out,” right? (crowd: “No”) it’s got to be tiring the man out (crowd: “No”) but I’m here to tell you, I’m here to testify…to you that the fact is that not only am I not tired now (crowd cheers) I ain’t gonna be tired any time in the near future (crowd cheers) so all I wanna know is is the band ready? (someone in the band: “Yeah”) are the singers ready? (singers: “Yeah”) is the people ready? (crowd cheers) just one more time for that little extra bit of energy I could use right now (crowd: “Yeah”) aaaahhh, let’s rock…
Intro to "Thunder Road"
“Oh yeah, thank you…uh…I wanna do this for my old fans out there tonight (crowd cheers) oh yeah, I first came here in 1975 (crowd cheers) I was fifteen years old, a big crowd (chuckles) (crowd cheers) unbelievable…yeah…and uh…I wanna thank everybody for coming out tonight, coming down to the show, I want you to know that (crowd cheers) that, uh…we’ve been coming here a long time and we’ve been treated well so often and you, uh, your on-going and your enduring support means a lot to me and I wanna thank you very much (crowd cheers) so this is for you (crowd “Bruuces”) I guess I’ll have to get used to that (chuckles)…”
Intro to "Born to Run"
“Alright, let’s take that ride (chuckles)…”

Mark Savage | My first Bruce Springsteen concert, I spent the whole time screaming/singing like a loon and having the best time I could have imagined at the age of 16….. Interesting to read this set list now and see the mix of songs on there. More than that I cannot really see, as I could not compare it with anything before. I liked the touring band on the basis that they played the songs well, and other than that I was just there to see Bruce, and he was great. |
