First tour appearance of "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town". Bruce makes a comment about wishing Bill Clinton good luck just before staring "If I Should Fall Behind". This gets quite a reaction from the crowd. "The Star-Spangled Banner" is played as a lead-in to "Born In The U.S.A.".
incl. Rehearsals.

Audience tape (V4TX).
Intro to "Local Hero"
"Good evening!…Hello, Dallas!…Yeah, yeah. This is a song, as I traveled through my hometown, saw myself in J.J. Newberry's, store window. Along with a German Shepherd and Bruce Lee, painted on black velvet, on sale for $19.99. Kind of puts the whole job in perspective for you, what do you think. Come on, Zack!"
Intro to "Lucky Town"
"Now, this is a song about, uh, taking some chances, starting over again. All right! I feel a little lucky."
Intro to "The Big Muddy"
"Hey, it's good to see you, too!…Yeah…Here's a song that, uh, I think when we're, when we're kind of brought up, we think that folks always say that there're, bring us up to believe that there are always straight lines around, that there's, that there's good and that there's evil, and that there's a right and there's a wrong thing to do. And, uh, absolutes, they bring us up to believe in absolutes. And I guess you get out there in the world, and everybody finds out about all the spaces in between. Which is where we all live, if you live in this country. So here's a song about, uh, growing up and finding yourself down there in the Big Muddy."
Intro to "57 Channels (And Nothin' On)"
"It's 1992… You see American cities in flames again. But you reap what you sow."
Intro to "If I Should Fall Behind"
"Thanks…Thank you…I wrote, uh, wrote that last song a little while after my son was born…Yeah! Oh yeah, I got a, we have a beautiful little boy now, and a beautiful little girl (chuckles)…That's good. Keeps your above the water. And it's, uh, it's funny, it's like, uh, I like…Kids are funny, you know, it's a big cliché about how they make you see everything a little differently. I think before, I, you know, it's always kind of hard to envision of the future in front of you. Hard to not lose yourself, kind of, after all of that feeling. You're all self-involved. And kids kind of come along, and they're good, because they give you that opportunity to see the future sort of pissing on your leg right there. (chuckles) So, so it makes it very real! (chuckles) Yeah, makes it very real. Kind of helps you rise above yourself, and, uh, it's scary, you know, it's a scary world for bringing kids into. Seems like, uh, you know, to live through the Los Angeles riots there, you know, we got a glimpse of it. Got a glimpse of the country that we live in where on a given day, it didn't matter where you started or what you believed in in your heart, or what you felt and who you were. It only mattered what you looked like, to whether you were going to live or die. So, that's kind of a, that's a scary thing. But, uh, I guess, uh, this is a song, this is my best song maybe about people connecting with each other, sort of what it takes. So, this is kind of about getting the small things right, and hoping that the big things will follow. So I'll do this tonight, I'm going to do it, uh, for your kids, and I'm going to do it to wish Bill Clinton good luck. (chuckles) Yeah! Some nights in the U.S.A. (laughs) There we go."
Intro to "Leap Of Faith"
"Thank you! That's all! I accept it! This is a song, I guess, about uh, about a lot of things I guess, about second chances, about kind of, you know, coming back at it, you get sort of, everybody's been kind of run down by love, had their spike thrust through their heart, had, had their pride stripped away, had their… been humiliated in front of their peers, and, uh, uh, all the places you go! But people keep coming back, because, what else is there? But it takes faith, you gotta work your faith back up again, you know, after you get them cold feet. And it takes some hope. And you hope that when there's love, faith, and hope, that sex will soon follow, that's right. It keeps you out on the trail, at least, huh? But anyway, this song, this is a song about all those things, love, faith, hope, sex, uh, love, adultery, you know, all the things that kind of make life such a big fucking mess? Uh, but keep it interesting! And, uh, so, it's also, uh, it's also sort of a diary of my own personal sexual habits in only very, very thinly disguised imagery, so… (chuckles) Anyway! Let's be hopeful! Here we go! Feels good."
Intro to "Man's Job"
"Some mighty Texans out there!…All right, Bobby, help me out, man! Mr. Bobby King! This is the audience participation part of the show, here we go!"
After "Man's Job"
"Whoa! A man's and woman's job! Let's hear it for the women!"
Middle of "Roll Of The Dice"
"…Oh, bring it down now…Yeah, bring it way, way down…Well, let's make it darker. Let's make it darker…Because when it comes…It comes way up out of the darkness…Up out of the night…When there's no hope in sight…Well, have you ever felt so lonely? Have you ever felt so lost inside? Have you ever felt so alone…Lost like, uh…Like you aren't sure of the choices you ought to make or the thing that you love, or even even of who you are anymore…Have you ever felt so lonely?…Have you ever felt so lost inside?…Well, it's just a kiss away…"
After "Roll Of The Dice"
"Mr. Bobby King! Cleo Kennedy, Carol Kennedy! The band!…Oh, oh!…This is just half-time! We're gonna take a break, and go backstage, lift a few weights, get on the treadmill for a while, and we'll be back out here with some more rock and soul entertainment for you! We'll see you in a little while, okay?"
Middle of "Light Of Day"
"…I drove thousands and thousands of miles to get down here tonight! (backing singers: yeah!) I drove thousands of miles from the great state of New Jersey just to get here tonight! (backing singers: yeah!) I came via Sweden, via France, via Italy, via Rome, via London, England, via New York City, via Chicago (backing singers: yeah!) Via Boston, via Phoenix, via Philadelphia! (backing singers: yeah!) Via San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, (???). (backing singers: yeah!) Came via Canada. (backing singers: yeah!) All the way down here to Dallas, Texas tonight! (backing singers: yeah!) I'm here tonight because there's just one thing that I've got to know! (backing singers: yeah!) I'm here tonight because I'm on a mission! (backing singers: yeah!) I'm here tonight because I know! (backing singers: yeah!) I know you're downhearted. (backing singers: yeah!) I know you're disappointed. (backing singers: yeah!) I know you're disaffected. (backing singers: yeah!) I know you're disillusioned. (backing singers: yeah!) I know there's 57 fucking channels and nothing on! (backing singers: yeah!) I know you know why I'm here tonight! (backing singers: yeah!) I know down in your spirit you know. (backing singers: yeah!) I'm here because there's one thing I've got to know. (backing singers: yeah!) What I want to know… (backing singers: yeah!) I want to know… (backing singers: yeah!) What I want to know is… (backing singers: yeah!) (crowd cheers) Is there anybody alive out there?…"
Intro to "Human Touch"
"Thank you."
Intro to "Glory Days"
"Thank you. All right, let's crank it up, fellows! Now rock that thing!"
Middle of "Glory Days"
"…Crystal Taliefero on the guitar, vocals, and the percussion! Miss Angel Rogers on the background vocals! Miss Gia Ciambotti! The lovely Carol Dennis! Miss Cleo Kennedy! Soul Man, Mr. Bobby King! The great Shane Fontayne on the guitar! Madman Tommy Sims on the bass! The incredibly cool Mr. Zack Alford on the drums! And last but not least, Professor Roy Bittan on the keyboards!…
(…)Zack, keep on rocking, now!…You guys tired yet?!…Is your ass up yet?!…Ah, put your hands in the air!…Shake them like you don't care!…Show the person next to you your underwear!…Ah, keep on going! Come on, now, we gotta see them!…
(…)Too old! Too fucking old, now! Can't do it no more! Can't do it like you used to! No, I'm too fucking old, now!…"
Intro to "Thunder Road"
"Thank you. Thanks, I'd like to just, uh, take a second here to thank everybody for coming down to the show tonight, thank you very much. It's been a while since I've been out on the road. I'd like to, uh, do this for all the old fans out there. And, uh, I'd like to thank you for your long time support, thank you for sticking with me, I appreciate it."
Intro to "Born To Run"
"Thank you. All right. Yeah! Sorry I've been away so long, I promise I'll get down here sooner next time! (chuckles) I can't send you home without this one, so here you go!"
Intro to "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town"
"Thank you! Goodnight! Thank you, Dallas! Thank you! We'll be seeing you!…A little Christmas present for you! All right, this is the first time we've played it, now. We need some Santas out there, let me hear you!…
(…) Everybody been good out there? Nobody cheatin' on their baby? No (???) Very loud, very loud, all right. Here we go!…"

tmac4468 | First Bruce show, had been waiting about 10 years for the chance. Lots of scalpers left with tickets outside. Took our seats in the upper deck at far end from stage. Got seats near the front side of the stage from some scalper for the price of a beer. Was a solid show, missed the band though. Great finish with Santa. |
