Intro to “Long Time Comin”
´´Thank you….alright….ooh, this is for the mamas and the papas….here´s ´Long Time Comin´´….´´
Intro to “Silver Palomino”
´´Thank you….I wrote a lot of songs about parents and children and mothers and sons on this record…this is a song I wrote for a friend of mine, she passed away very young and left, uh, two young sons behind, I wrote this for them and, uh….it´s about a young boy who loses his mother and feels like he sees her spirit in this horse that comes out of the mountains in the American southwest at night, this is called ´Silver Palomino´….´´
Intro to “For You”
´´Thank you….when I was, uh, when I was young, I didn´t write many love songs…. my father told me that love songs were government propaganda….uh, which, which, of whose only intent was to, uh, get you married and have kids and, and have to, you know, pay taxes and, uh….uh, he said this with tremendous conviction and I believed it for about, uh, 35 years or so (chuckles) but, uh….but my mother was, uh, was, uh, uh, Italian and quite romantic, you know, and, uh, so she always had all the romantic music on in the morning and, uh, the, the romance novels with all the guys that looked like Faybio on the cover, uh, I don´t know if Faybio or Fabio is very popular in Germany but he´s kind of, like he´s kind of a, uh, uh, steroided David Hasselhoff (chuckles) so, uh, uh, at any rate I was torn, I was torn between those two things and so I hid my love songs when I first started to write ´em, this is one of the first ones, I guess, I wrote and probably still one of the better ones….if I can remember it….´´
Intro to “Two Faces”
´´Thank you….then about, uh….16 years after that or so I, I, I, I started to write some love songs….but they were very twisted….´´
Intro to “All I´m Thinkin´ About”
´´I don´t know if I´ve got the voice for this one, I´m gonna try it….(someone yells: ´Bruce!´) somebody, uh, somebody slap that guy around (chuckles)….(starts playing, people start to clap loudly) all right, see what I can do….this ain´t gonna be easy, you´re gonna have to stop clapping (chuckles)….I´ll show you why….´´
Intro to “Countin´ on a Miracle”
´´Thank you….alright, I´ve got the, uh, eBay piano….yes, yes, it's over here…. uh….haven´t tried this one before, gonna try it, and that's sort of it….seems like I need a little more sound out of this massive instrument (chuckles) alright, here we go (starts playing) oh, too much (chuckles) it´s a game of inches, not yards (chuckles)….´´
Intro to “Lost in the Flood”
´´Danke, danke….(?)(chuckles) thank you….alright, I had a, I had a request a few days back for this by some guys that´ve been following me around so I´m gonna try and get ´em off my ass (chuckles) this is the stalking request for the stalkers, alright (chuckles)….´´
Intro to “Jesus Was an Only Son”
´´Thank you….yeah, I was, uh, I was brought up Catholic so, uh, Jesus is my official homeboy….and uh….I wrote this song, uh….I guess trying to think about what it would be like….Jesus as Mary´s son, just, uh, as somebody´s boy, you know, our kids, they have their own destinies….the first thing a parent wants to do is protect their children but your children have their own path to walk….and, uh, this is called ´´Jesus Was an Only Son´´….
(….) at his mother´s feet….now, the first thing that you….realise as a parent is how there isn´t anything you wouldn´t do to keep your children safe….it comes on you so suddenly….and its sureness is frightening….Mother prays….
(….) shall pierce your dreams this night….what gives our choices weight are the things that we sacrifice for them, the parts of life….that we give up….for something else, for something we hope is better….so I always figured that Jesus had to be thinking that Galilee is really beautiful this time of year….that there was a little bar down there he probably could manage, that Mary Magdalene could tend bar and they could have a bunch of kids…and that you could get to see the sun fall on their faces and you could get to feel the breath in your lungs….and you could get to see the next day….and the next day…and the next day… and the next day…and the next day….in the garden….´´
Intro to “Leah”
´´Thank you….I wrote this song, uh, we all carry the seeds of our destruction….uh, sort of God´s joke, I guess….uh, hey, that´s the price of getting kicked out of Eden, I mean come on (chuckles) but obviously with free will, with this hand you build and with this hand you burn….and, uh, this is a song about a guy struggling between those two places and coming down finally on the right side, oh! [apparently a little girl from the audience got onstage at this point] oh, hello, hello….I, uh (?)(chuckles)….I don´t really remember being in Germany back in 1977, actually (chuckles) but, uh….(chuckles) he says (chuckles) but, uh, anyway, a love song dedicated to my youngest fan (chuckles)….good luck….´´
Intro to “The Hitter”
´´Thank you….this is kind of, uh….I guess this is the flipside of that story, this is, uh, following our path to the seeds of your destruction….uh….this is a song about a young guy who leaves his home and, uh, goes to New Orleans, becomes quite a champion and….comes back home towards the end of his life and has this discussion with his mother through a locked door….Freud is smiling in his grave somewhere (chuckles) this is called ´The Hitter´….´´
Intro to “Matamoros Banks”
´´The stage has very quietly been rushed (chuckles)….uh, yes, that last one sent ´em over the edge (chuckles) alright, here we go, sssh….this is a song I wrote as a sequel to ´Across the Border´ from the Tom Joad record, every year, uh, in the United States, hundreds of people die trying to get across our southern borders, they, uh, die in the mountains and in the deserts….and in the backs of vans and in the rivers….this is a song called ´Matamoros Banks´….uh, I wrote this song backwards, the first verse is, is, uh, the body at the bottom of the river…to the man walking across the desert to, uh….the banks of Matamoros, which is a town across from Brownsville, Texas, just do me one favor and don´t use those flash cameras because it´s kind of distracting (?) thank you (chuckles)….´´
Intro to “Ramrod”
´´(plays polka on the harmonica) Too much German beer….´´
Intro to “The Promised Land”
´´Thank you….thank you very much…..I wanna thank everyone for coming to the show tonight, thank you so much….I appreciate it….and uh….this, uh, this is for you, this is called ´Promised Land´….´´
