Bruce plays a few bars of Ray Charles's "What'd I Say" before beginning "Spirit In The Night". "I'm On Fire" is on banjo. “Thank you….thank you….this is for the, uh….moms and pops out there….my kids are almost teenagers so they´re already trouble but, uh (chuckles) so I wish you good luck and courage with your babies, this is ´Long Time Comin´….”
Intro to “Silver Palomino”
“Thanks….I wrote a lot about, uh, parents and children on this record and, uh, mothers and sons particularly, this was a song about a young boy who loses his mom and….feels like he….finds her spirit in this palomino-horse that comes out of the mountains at night, this is called ´Silver Palomino´….”
Intro to “Incident on 57th Street”
“I was telling everybody that, uh, I didn´t write a lot of love songs when I….on my early records ´cause my father told me that all love songs were government propaganda….and, uh, that their main purpose was, of course, to get you married and have kids and pay taxes and get your nose to the grindstone….he was very sure about it….my mother, on the other hand, she thought that….it was do-or-die (chuckles) it was everything (chuckles) and she wasn´t quitting (chuckles) till it was over (chuckles) and so she had all these, this romantic music on the radio in the morning and, uh, and she read those books with the guys that look like Fabio on the front, I don´t know if they (chuckles) I don´t know if they have ´em over here, romantic, the romantic novels, you know, ´Love is,´ uh….I don´t know, ´a sacrifice, a splendored thing,´ I´m not sure (chuckles) but they all have these very florid titles, but, uh, so what I did was I decided I wouldn´t write any love songs for about 30 years (chuckles) but the ones that I did write, I hid and, uh, this is maybe one of those….”

“I don´t know how to explain this to you….but in the United States right now, there is a big debate….over whether the Man came first or the monkey came first….I don´t know if that´s a big debate….in Copenhagen….I hope not (chuckles)….there´s no place like home (chuckles)….”

“Thank you….thank you very much….uh, yes, we have the, uh, special eBay piano, we will put in the business, the pedal, the pedal (chuckles) there´s a piece missing (chuckles) we need all of them to work

“Alright….hold on, boys! (chuckles)….alright (chuckles) they´re trying to take it away already, I´m not done with it yet, hold on (chuckles) alright, this was a request, I haven´t played this on the tour, I´m not, I´m not gonna play it again either, just gonna play it right now, this was, uh, somebody wanted it out back and we need to loosen the whole thing up a little bit so I´m gonna try it (chuckles) I´m gonna do this for you, alright….this is the same piano that Ray Charles wrote ´What´d I Say´ on, uh…..but it´s not the same one, I mean it´s like the one (chuckles)(plays a short snippet of ´What´d I Say´)(chuckles) that´s the sound (chuckles)(cheers) I told you….(chuckles) now, if only these fingers would behave like Ray´s (chuckles)….(starts playing a jazzy intro) come on, Ray (chuckles)(cheers) no, no, I´m cheating, I, I can´t accept any applause for that (chuckles)….”
Intro to “Jesus Was an Only Son”
“Thank you….(someone yells “Born to Run”) no, I´m not gonna play that bastard, alright (another request from the audience) nah, it´s too late for that one (chuckles) alright, let me see what I got here….ah, I was brought up Catholic so, uh….uh, first 13 years of my life, uh, then I went to Catholic bible school for a year and, uh, then I got the hell out of there as quick as I could (chuckles) but uh (chuckles) but, uh, it´s like that scene in The Godfather where Al Pacino goes ´I keep trying to get out but they keep pulling me back,´ you know, it´s like (chuckles) once you´re in, it´s, it´s a club, you´re in, you know, you´re, you´re stuck and, uh, Jesus is your homeboy for the rest of (chuckles) your life, and, uh, I got a bunch of little pagan babies at home, you know, I kind of didn´t want to run them through the whole thing so, uh, uh….but when I went back, you know, to look at all my songs, they got so much, it was a source of tremendously powerful poetry and imagery….uh, suitable enough to, uh, scare the, uh, shit out of any, uh, uh, six- or seven-year-old (?)(chuckles) but as I, as I went and wrote, I ended up, my songs were filled with a lot of religious imagery and I wrote this song a while back, I was interested in, uh, mothers and sons and so I said ´Well,´ I was trying to see the relationship between Jesus and Mary and how that sort of, you know, your kids, my kids are young but they already, you know, they have their own destiny and, uh, they´ll tell you about it right away just as (chuckles) quick as you wanna ask ´em but, uh, uh, this is about that, our children have their own destiny and uh….we´re along for the ride (chuckles) and it´s a life sentence, my friends (chuckles)….
(….) at his mother´s feet….one of the first things that strikes you when your children come along is how there is nothing in the world that you wouldn´t do to keep them safe….and free from harm….it comes on as a sudden shock, especially to, uh, self-involved musicians and the like (chuckles)….Mother prays….
(….) shall pierce your dreams this night….now if our choices are….if our choices are given weight by the things that we sacrifice for them, we choose something and we give up something else….I always figured that Jesus must´ve been thinking that Galilee was pretty nice this time of year….and that there was a bar down there that he could manage and Mary Magdalene could tend bar and they could´ve had a bunch of kids and save the preaching for the weekend and got to see the sun fall on their faces ….and got to see the next day….and feel the air in your lungs….and see the next day…. and the next day….and the next day….and the next day…..in the garden at Gethesemane….´´
Intro to “The Hitter”
“Thank you, I, uh….yeah, I, I grew up in a house that was, uh, touched by both fortune and fate and uh….I guess, uh, this is a song, I supposed, about how we carry the seeds of our own destruction, which, uh….I guess, is kind of God´s joke, uh, you know, with this hand we build things, with this hand we burn and uh….I don´t know if that´s the way God planned it but that´s the way He let it be, this is, uh, ´The Hitter´ ….”
Intro to “Matamoros Banks”
“Thank you….this was a song I, I wrote as a sequel to ´Across the Border,´ a song I used to end the Tom Joad-tour with and, uh, each year in the States, there´s hundreds of people that die trying to get across our southern borders, they die in the mountains and in the heat of the desert and backs of vans and in the rivers….so this was a song I wrote for them and it´s, uh….the song´s told backwards, from the body in the river to the man traveling across the desert till he stands on the banks of the Matamoros, which is a town across from Brownsville, Texas, this is called ´Matamoros Banks´ ….”
Intro to “Wild Billy´s Circus Story”
“Alright, here´s one, uh, let me see….here´s a song, a birthday song, I´m gonna send this out for somebody´s birthday, yes….you the birthday boy?…no, I don´t think it´s you (chuckles) huh? (someone: “It´s Dennis”) it´s Dennis?….is that you?….you are? ….what was the song you wanted? [I´m guessing he yells “Wild Billy”] alright (chuckles) alright, this is for Dennis….how old were, how old are you? (someone yells “15”) no, how old are you? (Dennis: “28”) you´re 28?….hell, man (chuckles) I don´t think you were around when I wrote this one (chuckles)….happy birthday….

“Thank you….thanks a lot….I wanna thank everyone for coming out to the show tonight, thank you very much…..thank you….(?) thanks, you were a great audience and I appreciate it, it´s fun to come out and play like this and, uh, to have this kind of space and this kind of, uh, this kind of an audience, it touches my hear, thank you very much….this is for you….”

| Tommy Beck Kobberoe | What can I say? My 9th concert with him since '88 and my first solo. The goosebumps came crawling after about 10 seconds of long lost gem "My Beautiful Reward" and stayed for most of the concert. One highlight after the other. Much has been written about the tour, but what I really liked was his challenging the audience when he moved 4-6 feet away from the mike making the experience REALLY acoustic. Except for one moron who shouted "higher" the first time he did it, you could hear a needle drop during these "stunts". All in all the audience was great, except for the never ending run for the toilet for those who had to buy the "emergency" package from the bar before the concert - 5 pints of beer for the price of 4. It was my wifes second encounter with Bruce, and she was stunned by his performance. If one person can be intimate with 6500 people it's Bruce. Actually, it was my 1 year wedding anniversary gift for my wife, and she didn't know until 1 hour before showstart. |

| Anders Krogh | As I entered the Arena I was first disapointed to find I was sitting on the very far skirts of my row, having to twist my neck to the point of breaking, but that was only a problem till Bruce entered the stage and all was happily forgotten… It was a remarkable good concert with some good interpertations of old songs with a sound so clean it was like being in the local hifi club surrounded by geeks. Atleast from where I was sitting. and when the extras came I was blessed by my bad seats as I was able to get up front to jump infront of the scene… It's been 2 days since the concert and my smile is still as wide as my face can produce, it will fade over time but never be forgotten. That was one good concert! Love to you all. |
