Intro to “Spirit in the Night”
“Alright…I’ve…traveled around the world quite a bit…I’ve seen a lot of things…over our fifty years of traveling (crowd cheers) now I’m gonna be sixty-fucking-five (crowd cheers) but I saw something last night I’ve never seen before…I saw something last night in Sydney I’ve never seen before…now…we’re staying in a fancy hotel, very nice, beautiful, people are great and, uh…I go…and I realize that I have a computerized toilet seat (laughs from the crowd) in my room…only in the rooms of the rich and shameless, I’m sure, but…I have a computerized toilet seat…and basically what it does… as you walk in, it opens itself up (laughs from the crowd) says “Hi!” …I’ve never, I didn’t know they existed, I didn’t know there was that kind of technology, that there were minds out there working on…those kinds of comforts for…so, but the thing is, you know, you are in a hotel room and you forget where you are in the middle of the night and we’re all jetlagged so we’re sleeping in the day and up at night, we’re on drugs and all kinds of crazy things (?)(crowd cheers) so I wake up in the middle of the night and I can’t find the lights because you can never find the lights in the room you’re in because they change every night so I feel my way into the bathroom and all I see is this little blue light staring at me and then suddenly…Charles, help me with this (Charlie plays some organ piece) so I stand there…and I swear…I looked down and I heard…
Can you feel the spirit?…can you feel the spirit now?…can you feel the spirit?…can you feel the spirit now?…and I took that as a mystical sign because no one knows where and how the Lord appears to you…or what time of day or night a reckoning will be called upon you…so I figured that that was the question…the proposition that I was being asked to put forth tonight in Sydney!… so what I wanna know is if you can feel the spirit, I want you to answer me with a mighty “Yeah, yeah!” – can you feel the spirit? (crowd and band: “Yeah, yeah!”) can you feel the spirit now? (crowd and band: “Yeah, yeah!”) can you feeeel the spirit? (crowd and band: “Yeah, yeah!”) can you feel the spirit now? (crowd and band: “Yeah, yeah!”)…”
