Intro to “The Wish”
“I think so…I saw this was a request out here, this is…a little awful long…(sings to himself)…I think it’s alright…alright, there was a sign over here for a song called “The Wish”…”The Wish” is a song…yeah, you got it? there you go, alright, this is a song I wrote about my mother…now I usually, uh, I’m famous for singing about my father, you see, but, uh (chuckles) ‘cause writing about your mother is about the most uncool thing you can do in rock music (?)…but, uh, oh, I know what I need…I bought my mother an iPhone and, uh, she’s 86 or 87 and, uh…she does, she’s kind of figured out how to use FaceTime (crowd cheers) so…but she can’t figure out the difference in time between the United States and Australia so around 6.30 every morning, uh, she doesn’t quite know how to handle the iPhone so I get a shot of the inside of my mother’s nose around 6.30 a.m. (laughs from the crowd) “Bruce!…I love this thing, I love it!…but I’m just playing around with it, I don’t know what I’m doing with it but…” so what I do every day is I send her a picture and I send it so she wakes up in the morning and it’s there so (crowd cheers) so everybody say “Hi” now (crowd cheers)(takes a picture on his phone) looking good (chuckles) she’ll be happy about that…this song is absolutely one hundred percent true (chuckles)…”
Middle of “The Wish”
“Now, one of my favorite things about at this point in my work life is I get to look out into the audience and I see, uh…fathers with sons, and I see moms and grandmoms and little girls, little sisters, yes, you sang very good the other night (chuckles) we get people of all ages and, uh…that was something that I think that my mom taught me when she was very young, she loved rock music, she loved rock and roll, and her enthusiasm and passion for it rolled over on me so we’re just glad to have you all coming out, all the different generations (crowd cheers) and somewhere out there is the future of rock and roll (chuckles)…”
