“I see a request for this one out here, uh…take that big, bright light out of my eyes…yeah…(?) there he is, alright…this was a, uh…I had …I was lucky enough when I was young, there were two brothers who were a little bit older than me, they were in a band called Motifs, they were called the Cichon brothers and when I started playing, before there were, there weren’t that many musicians in town and, uh…I’ve been telling the folks that when I signed my record deal, I’d never met or known anybody who’d ever signed a record deal before and no one in the E Street Band had never been on an airplane (chuckles) been telling everybody we were like the lost tribes of New Guinea – we would see them overhead, we knew they were there…but, uh, I was lucky enough when I was young to have two, two great mentors, they were the Cichon brothers, one was Ray Cichon, who played the guitar and he took his time to come over at the end of his workday, he worked in a shoe store, he’d come by and show me the latest leads and different moves on the guitar a few times a week, and he had a brother named Walter and Walter was the first guy I ever encountered that had the charisma of a real, real rock star, he had long hair, curly, long hair down to here, he had boots and he just was a little scary to talk to and he was a tremendous front man and, uh, he joined the army and went missing in action in Vietnam and also the drummer in my band Bart Haynes, Bart Haynes joined the marines and was killed in action and so I’m gonna send this song out tonight to all the Veterans in the house, all those who served for us (crowd cheers) (?)…this is called “The Wall,” it was written after a visit to the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Washington D.C…”
