With 33 songs and just short of three-and-a-half hours, the sole Philadelphia date of the leg is the longest show to date. Two tour premieres feature in the set, "My Love Will Not Let You Down" with Bruce climbing on the amps in front of the drum riser to encourage Max during his solo, and a memorable and emotional "Jungleland". Bruce adds a new introduction to "Drive All Night", explaining that late in the River sessions he needed a love song so he went back into the archives to find the song, which was originally recorded in 1977 during the Darkness On The Edge Of Town sessions. Bruce then added a new vocal to the original 1977 backing track. "Two Hearts" includes "It Takes Two". Patti Scialfa returns to the stage after missing the last two shows.

Intro to “Meet Me in the City”
“Good evening (crowd cheers)…”
Middle of “Meet Me in the City”
“Philadelphia! (crowd cheers) my brothers and sisters (crowd cheers) alright…we’re so glad to be here in the City of Brotherly Love tonight (crowd cheers) are you ready to be entertained? (crowd cheers) are you ready to be entertained? (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “The Ties That Bind”
“Good evening (crowd cheers) evening, evening, evening…”The River,” “The River,” “The River” was my coming-of-age record… before that we were all part of an outsider community on the streets of Asbury Park (crowd cheers) records we made were outsider records, “Greetings from Asbury Park” and “Wild and the Innocent”…but by the time I got to “The River,” I was looking for a way to get inside, that’s where some things I was looking for were, I noticed what bonded people to their lives, their work, their commitments and their families, I wanted to imagine and write about those things, I figured if I could write about them, maybe I’d get a step closer to realizing them in my own life so that’s what I did, I wanted to make a big record that felt like life or that felt like an E Street Band show (crowd cheers) I wanted, I wanted the record to contain fun and dancing and laughter and jokes and good comradeship, uh, love, faith, sex, lonely nights and of course teardrops…and I figured if I could make a record big enough to contain all those things, maybe I’d get a little closer to the answers and the home I was trying to find so, uh, 30 years on tonight we want you to come along with us again as we go down to “The River” (crowd cheers) let’s see what we find (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Sherry Darling”
“Alright, Philly (crowd cheers) party noises! (crowd cheers) come on! (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Independence Day”
““Independence Day,” “Independence Day” (crowd cheers) was the first song I wrote about fathers and sons…it’s the kind of song you write when you’re young…and you’re first startled by your parents’ humanity…you’re shocked to realize that they had their own dreams and their own desires and their own hopes that maybe didn’t pan out so perfectly for them…and you’re too young to understand the blessings that compromise bring…so all you can see
are the compromises they had to make…where it looks like they shorted themselves…where it looks like they gave up on things… and when you’re young, you haven’t had to live through that yet…and the very idea of it frightens you and all you can see is a world closing in that they seem locked into and that’s a world you want to get out of no matter what it takes…so I had a simple setting for this song, it was just a late night conversation around the kitchen table between two people that loved each other and were struggling to understand one another…this is “Independence Day” (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Hungry Heart”
“Alright, another song about skipping town (chuckles)…”
Intro to “I Wanna Marry You”
“Alright, woo!…I wrote this song as a daydream…then I dreamed I was gonna play maracas…maracas are the instrument of love… they’re the instrument of sex (crowd cheers)(shakes the maracas) any idiot can do it (laughs from the crowd) but like I say this song was a daydream, you’re standing on the corner, watching someone you’re never gonna meet walk by…and you imagine this whole life with that person just by the way they’re moving or walking or the way they look…what your kids are gonna look like, where you’re gonna live, what you’re gonna do…of course you imagine the easiest kind of life…it’s all bliss, bliss, bliss and all first kisses, first kisses, first kisses…who remembers their first kiss? (crowd cheers) of course…mine was…Maria Espinoza (crowd cheers) in the bleachers at the Y.M.C.A (crowd cheers) I limped all the way back home (laughs from the crowd)(chuckles) that’s right, you imagine that love without consequences…the one that doesn’t exist…but, hey, I don’t wanna ruin this, this is a song of youth, of imagining love in all of its glory and all of its tentativeness, all of its sweetness…it’s not the real thing…but I’ve got these maracas – I don’t need the real thing (chuckles) and besides you gotta start someplace…Sometimes at night when I lie in bed…I still see her face running ‘round my head…sometimes at night when I lie in bed…I still see her face running ‘round my head…here she comes walking down the street…here she comes walking down the street… she’s looking so fine, she’s looking so sweet…she’s so fine, she’s so sweet…oh, someday I wanna make her mine, I know I will…yeah, someday I’m gonna make her mine, I know I will…someday she’s gonna stop instead of walking by…she’s gonna stop instead of walking by, she’s gonna stop instead of walking by, she’s gonna stop now instead of walking…oh, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl…little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl…little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl…little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl…my little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl…little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl…my little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl…little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl (crowd cheers) let’s catch up to her…wait a minute…wait a minute…”
Intro to “Cadillac Ranch”
“Alright, this is a funeral song…let’s go down to Cadillac Ranch (crowd cheers) Philly, scream!…”
Intro to “Stolen Car”
“This is the first song I wrote about men and women that kind of got down to the nitty-gritty of it…asked the question if you lose your love, do you lose yourself…this is “Stolen Car” (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Ramrod”
“Alright, let’s roadhouse (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Drive All Night”
“(intro music starts)…As we neared the end of the record, I knew I wanted to, I felt like I needed a love song…so I went back in…into our archives and I found this that we cut in 1977, I think, in one take…”
towards the end of “Wreck on the Highway”##**
“Well, “The River”…was really about time…how when you enter the adult world, when you choose your partner, when you find your work…how the clock starts on all of us and time slips away…and you realize you have a limited amount of time…to do your work…to raise your family…and to try and do something good…(music stops) (crowd cheers) that’s “The River!” (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Atlantic City”
“Alright, thank you, let’s carry on (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Born to Run”
“Thank you, thank you (crowd cheers) thank you, Philadelphia (crowd cheers)(chuckles) Philly (crowd cheers) oh my God, oh Lord (crowd cheers) oh Lord (crowd cheers) alright, we got some friends in the hall tonight, folks from Philabundance (crowd cheers) Philabundance is the largest hunger relief organization in the Delaware Valley…through small food pantries and emergency kitchens and shelters Philabundance makes sure no one in this community has to go hungry, if you see the folks from Philabundance, they’re on the frontlines doing the good work, doing God’s work, give them a hand if you see them on your way out (crowd cheers) alright, let’s go (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Shout”
“Philly! (crowd cheers) let me hear you scream! (crowd cheers)…”
Middle of “Shout”
“Soozie Tyrell on the fiddle, guitar and vocals (crowd cheers) Charlie Giordano on the organ (crowd cheers) Nils Lofgren on the guitar (crowd cheers) Jake Clemons on the saxophone (crowd cheers) the Mighty One, Max Weinberg on the drums (crowd cheers) Mr. Garry W. Tallent on the bass (crowd cheers) he’s got a new album out, ladies and gentlemen, go look for it…Professor Roy Bittan (crowd cheers) Miss Patti Scialfa (crowd cheers) and Little Steven Van Zandt on the guitar (crowd cheers) yeah…yeah…oh, feeling good…oh…yeah…warming up, feeling good…feeling loose… very loose…Bruce is loose (crowd cheers) oh, Philly! (crowd cheers) Philly! (crowd cheers) Philly! (crowd cheers) Philly! (crowd cheers) you’ve just seen the heart-stopping, pants-dropping, Earth-shocking, hard rocking, booty-shaking, Earth-quaking, love-making, Viagra-taking, history-making, legendary E (crowd: “Street Band!”)…
(…) Thank you, Philly, we love you (crowd cheers) you’re so good – bring it up to here…bring it up to G…you’re so damn good…”

Nick | Philly shows usually have a special feel to them, and this one was no exception. Bruce and the band brought it from the start. Playing in front of a packed house, Meet Me in the City kicked off the show and was well received by the crowd who largely seemed to be familiar with the new outtake. The River album performance was everything I hoped it to be. The band rocked hard on Cadillac Ranch, You Can Look, and Ramrod. Crush on You and I'm a Rocker were also extremely fun and played well live. Drive All Night and Fade Away were powerful, and to my surprise Bruce brought out the 12 string guitar for The Price You Pay. After The River album finished, the second set electrified the crowd. A strong rendition of Atlantic City kicked off the post-River set. Nils performed a fantastic solo on Prove it All Night, and he even broke out a spin as he solo'd. Following that, My Love Will Not Let You Down had its tour premiere. I would love to hear that one in the set more often. When the opening notes of Jungleland rang out, I instinctively thought "wow, this is special." A flawless Jungleland floored the crowd. Rosie and Dancing in the Dark were fun as always, and even though they're being played every night, they're still a highlight of the show. Shout closed the show as anticipated, and everyone went home dancing. It was a wonderful, fun night in Philly. |
