Intro to “Meet Me in the City”
“Good evening! (crowd cheers)…”
Middle of “Meet Me in the City”
“Kansas City! (crowd cheers) here I come (crowd cheers) where are all the crazy little women? (crowd cheers)(chuckles) you sound good…come on, Max…”
Intro to “The Ties That Bind”
“Good evening, Kansas City! (crowd cheers) hello! (crowd cheers) hello, hello, hello…alright, alright…“The River” (crowd cheers) “The River” was my coming-of-age record…our records before “The River” were sort of, uh, young man’s records, they were…we were all part of a small, little community on the streets of Asbury Park (crowd cheers) but by the time I got to “The River” I was taking notice of the things that bond people to their lives, their work, their commitments and their families…I figured if I could write about those things, I might get closer to having them in my own life…and, uh, people always said “Gee, you know, the records are great but they’re not, you know, I mean, they’re not quite like the live shows so “The River” was a record where we tried to make a record that felt like an E Street Band show (crowd cheers) that felt big as life, I wanted it to contain fun and dancing and jokes and good comradeship, love and faith, lonely nights, heartbreak, teardrops, sex (crowd cheers) I wanted to try and get to all that…figured if I could make a record big enough to hold those things, I’d get a little closer to the answers and the home I was looking for so…anyway, let’s go back go back down to “The River” and see what we find (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Sherry Darling”
“Let me hear the Kansas City party right now! (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Independence Day”
““Independence Day” (crowd cheers) was the first song that I wrote about fathers and sons…I think I was…23 or 24…it was the kind of song you write when you’re young and you’re first…shocked by your parents’ humanity…by the idea that…they had their own dreams and their own desires and their own hopes that may or may not have played out as they hoped they might…and so you watch… and you watch…but all you can see are the adult compromises that they had to make to build a life…and you’re still too young to understand the blessings that compromise brings…so all you see is this…small world tightening in around them and all you can think about is getting away…I had a very simple setting for this song, I wanted it to be a late night conversation around the kitchen table between two people that loved each other but who were struggling to understand one another…”
Intro to “I Wanna Marry You”
“Alright, do we have any lovers out there tonight? (crowd cheers) if you’re in love, kiss your baby right now! (chuckles)…ah, looking good, looking good…this is a love song…but it’s also a song of youth …where the love is like a daydream…and nothing ever goes wrong… ‘course when you’re young, you always imagine the easiest kind of love…the kind without the consequences and the responsibilities… no arguments…no disagreements…it’s the kind that doesn’t exist, that kind (chuckles)(crowd cheers) that’s right…but, hey, this is a song of imagining love and what it would be like in all of its glory and tentativeness and tenderness, it’s not quite the real thing but you gotta start someplace…Well, sometimes at night when I lie in bed…I still see her face running round my head…sometimes at night when I lie in bed…I still see her face running round my head…here she comes walking down the street…here she comes walking down the street…she’s looking so fine, she’s looking so sweet…she’s so fine, she’s so sweet…someday I’m gonna make her mine, I know that I will…someday I’m gonna make her mine, yes, I know I will… someday she’s gonna stop instead of walking by…she’s gonna stop instead of walking by, she’s gonna stop instead of walking, she’s gonna stop instead of walking…oh, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl…little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl… little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl…little girl, little girl, little girl, little girl…oh, my girl, my girl, my girl, my girl, oh, my girl, my girl, my girl… my girl, my girl, my girl, my girl, my girl, my girl, my girl…(crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Cadillac Ranch”
“Alright, I want you to bury my body at the Cadillac Ranch (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Fade Away”
“Little Jersey soul for you (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Ramrod”
“Thank you (crowd cheers) alright (crowd cheers) let’s shake your ass down at the roadhouse! (crowd cheers)…”
Towards the end of “Wreck on the Highway”
“Well, “The River” was about time…time slipping away and how once you enter the adult life, you choose your work and you choose your partner, the clock starts ticking and you walk alongside not only the people you’ve chosen to live with but you walk alongside your own mortality…and you realize you got a limited amount of time…to do your work, to raise your family, to try and do something good…try and do something good…(music stops)(crowd cheers) that’s “The River!” (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Badlands”
“Alright, alright, alright (crowd cheers) come on, let’s kick it now (crowd cheers)…”
Middle of “Backstreets”
“Till the end…till the end…forever friends…forever friends…until the end…until the end…until the end…until the end…until the end…”
Intro to “Born to Run”
“Thank you (crowd cheers) thank you very much, thanks for coming out tonight, thank you, thank you, thank you (crowd cheers) yes…we have some friends in the hall, folks from the Metro Lutheran Ministry, the Metro Lutheran Ministry’s been serving the homeless and the poor here in Kansas City for 41 years (crowd cheers) they provide food, housing for the homeless and coaching for people to find jobs, they’re your neighbors out there on the frontline doing good work, the Metro Lutheran Ministry, if you see them on your way out, give them a hand, this is for them…”
Intro to “Shout”
“Give me an E-flat…Kansas City (crowd cheers) I feel real good now…I said I’m feeling alright…what I wanna know is…are you ready now?…are you ready now?…”
Middle of “Shout”
“Sister Soozie Tyrell on the guitar, fiddle and vocals (crowd cheers) Charlie Giordano on the organ (crowd cheers) Nils Lofgren on the guitar (crowd cheers) Jake Clemons on the saxophone (crowd cheers) the Mighty Max Weinberg on the drums (crowd cheers) Professor Roy Bittan on the piano (crowd cheers) Garry W. Tallent on the bass (crowd cheers) and last but not least, the inimitable Little Steven Van Zandt on guitar and vocals (crowd cheers) can I get a witness?… can I get a witness? …can I get a witness?…can I get a witness?… can I get a witness? …can I get a witness?…can I get a witness?… can I get a witness? …can I get a witness?…can I get a witness?… can I get a witness? …can I get a witness?…can I get a witness?… can I get a witness?…Kansas City! (crowd cheers) Kansas City! (crowd cheers) Kansas City! (crowd cheers) I want you to go home tonight and tomorrow I want you tell everybody that you see that you’ve just witnessed the heart-stopping, pants-dropping, hard rocking, earth-shocking, booty-shaking, earth-quaking, love-making, Viagra-taking, history-making, legendary E (crowd: “Street Band!”)…”
After “Bobby Jean”
“Thank you, Kansas City, the E Street Band loves you (crowd cheers)…”
