The first of two nights in Brooklyn, bringing the U.S. leg of The River Tour to an end. While the stage was bathed in purple light Bruce and Band (wearing purple clothing or accessories) pay tribute to Prince, who died April 21, by playing his classic hit "Purple Rain" as the show-opener. The first time this tour a song other than "Meet Me In The City" has opened, and Bruce also dropped the usual greetings and vamp section, instead speaking first at the conclusion of the song. "Tonight we want to dedicate our show to Prince of course", he said. "There's never been any better bandleader, showman, songwriter, arranger. Whenever I would catch one of his shows I would always leave humbled. I'm going to miss that and we're going to miss that." "Two Hearts" includes "It Takes Two" and "Drive All Night" includes a snippet of "Dream Baby Dream". Later in the show Bruce also announced that "these will be the last two nights we will officially play The River from start to finish," suggesting that the European tour will see a change in the setlists. When asked later if The River would be played in Europe, Garry Tallent tweeted "not in toto and not in sequence." Patti Scialfa is not present.

Intro to “Independence Day”
“Oh, “Independence Day” (crowd cheers) I was about 24 or 25 years old…and I was trying, trying to write a song where I…talked to my dad…sort of roundabout way of communicating…but…it’s the kind of song that, uh…well, you write it when you’re a young man and you’re first startled by your parents’ humanity, that, uh…they had their own dreams or their own hopes that…may have drifted away…and all you can see are the compromises that they had to make to build a life…and those compromises scare the hell out of you…and all you can think of doing is…getting away, getting away …so I had a simple setting, it was just a late night conversation around the kitchen table between two people that were struggling to understand one another…”
Intro to “Hungry Heart”
“Alright…Brooklyn! (crowd cheers) home of my mother! (crowd cheers)(chuckles)…”
Intro to “Crush on You”

Tom Cantillon | A 10+, no wait, a 20+ show by Bruce and band! Opening with a heartfelt Purple Rain, a tribute to a great musician and guitarist, Prince, was amazing! The River portion put me in another world. Masterful performances of those songs. Max and Roy killed it on Point Blank! Drive all Night still is a highlight for me. On top of a stellar performance of The River, Bruce and band delivered powerful versions of Badlands, Promised Land, Because the Night and Backstreets! He seemed like he just didn't want to stop. The music electrified him and in turn, electrified his audience. We were all going down The River together and it was one, amazing, joyous, spiritual ride! |

See Bruce Springsteen’s Poignant Cover of Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’“Prince forever! God bless,” singer says at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center |
Bruce Springsteen opened up his Brooklyn concert Saturday night by paying tribute to Prince with a powerful cover of the late icon’s classic “Purple Rain.” Springsteen poignantly sang the 1984 single, while Nils Lofgren delivered a searing stab at the song’s distinct guitar solo as the crowd chanted along with the track’s coda.
With the Barclays Center awash in purple light, the E Street Band chose to honor Prince out of the gate instead of beginning their show not with the usual The River Tour opener “Meet Me in the City.” “Prince forever! God bless,” Springsteen said as the song came to a close.
Although never collaborators, Prince and Springsteen have longed been connected, as both artists hit their commercial peaks in the Eighties; Prince’s Purple Rain and Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A. arrived within weeks of each other in the summer of 1984.
Sadly, the “Purple Rain” performance marked the third time the E Street Band honored a rock giant who died in 2016 with an onstage tribute, following their covers of David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” and Glenn Frey’s signature Eagles cut “Take It Easy.”
Following the performance, the Springsteen fan site Backstreets Magazine posted a photo of Steven Van Zandt, guitar in hand, backstage watching Purple Rain on a laptop for a last-minute lesson.
