“This is the first song I wrote about fathers and sons…I wrote it when I was about…24 or 25…it’s the kind of song you write when you’re young and you’re first startled by your parents’ humanity… you’re shocked to realize that they had their own dreams and their own hopes…that maybe didn’t pan out as perfectly as they might have thought…but all that you can see are the adult compromises that they had to make to build a life…and you’re still too young to…
see the blessings in those compromises or understand what that’s about…so the idea that just frightens you and all you can think about is getting away and getting away and getting away…I had a really simple setting for this song, it was just a late night conversation around the kitchen table between two people who love each other but are struggling to understand one another…that’s “Independence Day”…”
