“How are the people in the trees?…hey, hey! (crowd cheers) over there…this is, uh…I grew up in a little, small town…was about 10,000 people…streets were lined with all these beautiful trees… downtown was kind of…classic little American town…you knew everybody at the pool hall and you knew everybody at the barber shop…you knew everybody at the newsstand…and there was a part of it that was very welcoming if, if you fit in…and there was a side of it that was always very uncomfortable and somewhat threatening …and in my teens all I could think about was…I gotta get outta here! (chuckles) I gotta get outta here…and, uh (chuckles)(crowd cheers) hey, born to run (chuckles) you know…and I never really understood my parents feeling at home the way they did…and there was never a conversation about it, I could never…my dad was one of those guys that didn’t really talk much…so as I became a songwriter, I figured the only way to have a conversation with him was through my songs…and I started to write about our relationship …and hoping that he’d hear it…years and years went by, never heard anything back…if a song was good or if it was bad, if he liked the way he was portrayed, if he thought they all sucked – I didn’t hear anything…then one day, he was quite old, he was getting towards his death…I said “Dad, you know, what are my favorite, what are your favorite songs of mine?”…without blinking an eye, he said “The ones about me” (chuckles) (crowd cheers) so (chuckles) (crowd cheers) so he had been listening (chuckles) this is one of the first one about him, I wrote it when I was really young, about 24 or 25, and, uh, it’s the kind of song you write when you’re young, you don’t understand your parents, they don’t really register as people (chuckles) and, uh, you can’t understand the choices they made, the compromises they made to build a life, to raise you…and all you can see are…how those compromises have seemed to have held them down, you’re too young to see the blessings that come with compromise, that it takes those things to, to build a real life…but, uh…I had a simple setting for this song, it was a late night conversation between him and I around the kitchen table, two people that love each other but…there’s a failure to communicate…”

(crowd cheers) give me a little wave, let me know you are out there…oh…(chuckles) that looks good…that looks good… well, I used to spend summer days like this doing pretty much nothing…I had my apartment above a luncheonette and I’d go down and eat a…ham and lettuce and cheese sandwich with mayonnaise… on wheat bread…that was the healthy part (chuckles) I would eat that sandwich every day at the same time…it was one of the things I looked forward to…and every day at the same time there was a woman that would come passing by…and I used to see her and let my mind wander…I would stop…eating that ham and lettuce, cheese, mayonnaise on wheat bread sandwich…and out of respect, watch her walking on by…’cause I thought everything should cease …out of respect when this woman walked by…I thought that the world…cars in the street…people stop shopping, please!…stop going on your way and just stop (the band stops playing) out of respect… respect (crowd cheers) and then when she got to the other side of the street (band starts playing again) the world could do as it pleased then, I didn’t give a damn…(singing:) Sometimes at night when I lie in bed, I still see her face running round my head, sometimes at night when I lie in bed, I still see that face running round my head…here she comes walking down the street, here she comes walking down the street, she’s looking so fine, she’s looking so sweet, yeah, she’s so fine, she’s so sweet…someday I’m gonna make her mine, yeah I know that I will, someday I’m gonna make her mine, yeah I know that I will…someday she’s gonna stop…she’s gonna stop…she’s gonna stop…Steve, out of respect!
