Dan French | Wow. Just wow. That's all I could write at first about the experience ('show' is too small a word) I had on 16 January. Let me get the superlatives out of the way: amazing, extraordinary, intimate, intense, joyful, emotional, stunning, life-affirming, summational, awe-inspiring, etc, etc – you name it, it challenges description. Expectations were impossibly huge, and although I had soaked up every review I could find, knew what track list to expect, had heard an audio recording of an earlier show, and so I thought I was prepared, I had no idea of the reality. I'm still processing it, but want to attempt to make some sense while the memories are still fresh. I can't possibly do this justice, and my words here will always feel incomplete, but for those who haven't been or can't go, let me try to take you with me… So walking into the Walter Kerr Theatre, my first reaction was how breathtakingly small and intimate it is. Of course I knew it holds 960 seats, and I'd seen photos taken inside, but nothing prepared me for the sense of how small-scaled it looks like in reality. Again, 'wow' was all I could say to my companions, Janice & Molly. I've been lucky enough to see Bruce in small venues before, and immediately I got a sense of how intimate and intense this was going to feel, but at the same time I could tell it would be special in a different way. Anyone who's been with me to a Bruce Springsteen concert knows my favourite spot is at the back of the pit, where I can relax, see everything fine (for photos and videos) and have space to enjoy the show with other like-minded friends around me. Fittingly, my seat in the theatre was the centre of the back row of the Mezzanine, so at once I felt at home; it was the equivalent of the back of the pit for me. With a well-angled slope of seats ahead, I knew I'd have a perfect view of the stage. 8.05pm: showtime. A brief disembodied introduction, and Bruce walks onstage with his acoustic guitar. He launches right away into his spoken 'presentation', for want of a better word. It's not like a concert (although it's talking, music, and quoting from his book), although I have never felt more 'in concert' with Bruce on stage. Jon Landau referred to Bruce's career as a 'conversation' with his fans, but it's so much more than that, it's a RELATIONSHIP, for many of us unlike any other connection we have to our favourite musical artists; and this event is an extremely powerful re-affirmation, concentration and solidification of that relationship. If it was a marriage, it would feel like a renewal of vows. An early review wisely pointed out that previously Bruce's stories have served his songs, but here – and especially vividly in the first part of the night – it's the other way around. This really highlights how the two forms are not separate but united. 'Singer-songwriter' isn't enough of a title to describe what he does, he's a 'Songwriter-storyteller-singer'. Often the talking is underpinned by gentle musings on guitar or piano. His command of the audience never ceases to amaze me after all these years: there were one or two people who felt the need to whoop or call out now and then, but blessedly few, as this demands attention – apart from natural applause at the end of songs, instinctively it seemed right to wait for Bruce to cue us when it was appropriate to express ourselves, and this totally reinforced the intimacy and effectiveness, drawing us all closer together, hanging on his words. At times I felt as if I'd been holding my breath for much of the two hours and twenty minutes he was on stage. In addition, of course, Bruce is a masterful musician and performer all at the same time. I am still impressed at the dedication and professionalism he needs to make this sound fresh and spontaneous night after night for what is still currently an indefinite run. It could so easily have become a static, routine performance this far into its course, but even though I knew Bruce would work hard not to let that happen, it's still remarkable how he can make you feel you're in a room full of people hearing him do this for the very first time. Part of this effect is created by what seems a genuinely thoughtful, often slow delivery, with quite long pauses in the middle of speech, as if he's formulating the words in front of you; it's totally convincing, even mesmerising. The lyrics are mostly faithful to the originals; occasionally a difference is apparent, such as 'rug mill' replacing 'textile mill' in 'My Hometown'. The sound in the theatre is sparklingly clear and perfect, the acoustics so good that Bruce could step away from the microphones and address us a couple of times without any amplification. The lighting is simple but extremely effective; it changes so subtly you'd hardly notice. While singing about the desert, for example, the back of the stage has a sultry red glow like a sunrise or sunset. Bruce is often starkly silhouetted especially as a song draws to a close, fading to black before the next part. These elements make a huge contribution to the power of the experience. Waves of emotion are balanced with absorbed listening to his narration and singing. Just seeing the man walk on stage brought the first swelling to my heart; thankfully the superb pacing and structure of the sequence is such that it's not constantly overwhelming. New Jersey is playfully described as 'Jerzekestan', as in a small country that no-one knows much about. He joked after 'My Father's House' that we were 'off suicide watch', recognising the need for some levity after the intensely personal parts. 'Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out' provides the emotional core to the middle section: a long, rambling meditation on the importance and power of the magic of the equation 1+1=3, love, music, the band, and of course the Big Man – Bruce cued a huge, long roaring crowd ovation, reminiscent of the audience response on recent tours. You'd have to be made of stone not to react to that; for me, I felt my heart bursting at such a moment of pure connection and unity with Bruce and everyone in that room. We know Bruce has so often reinvented – or more properly reverse-engineered - the arrangements of his music from band versions to acoustic performances. It struck me that there were many songs played which I'd never heard in person either on solo acoustic guitar, and particularly on solo piano. ('My Father's House' was an all-time first for me that night, finally completing my 'Nebraska' songs heard live after 36 years.) 'Born In The USA', remarkably, stood out for me even though I've heard him do several different acoustic versions over the years – it may be his most frequently changed song. Apart from the staggeringly intense, drawn-out blues slide guitar opening, I noticed that almost all of the rest – the vocal part of the song - was sung a capella (I think one of the only times I've heard Bruce sing a capella at any shows I attended was when he did 'Ain't Got You' on the Tunnel tour in 1988, 30 years ago). Such an arrangement was even more effective than ever at stripping down the song to its essential element – the story of its lyrics, with really minimal guitar touches for the most part. Midway through the night, Bruce takes a two-song pause from his solo presentation by bringing on Patti Scialfa for a demonstration of how he hasn't been alone in this, either professionally or personally. Fittingly, the songs they perform together are 'Tougher Than The Rest' – done with him seated at the piano, and her standing nearby so they face each other, giving the impression of a song which connects them – and 'Brilliant Disguise', chosen to reflect on their life since the initial connection, with all the challenges and complications that come with the risk of trust. The second part of the evening seems to pass more rapidly, as it's dominated by the songs more than the stories which seem more prominent in the first section. True to form, Bruce draws the sequence to a close with the same immaculate sense of pacing he brings to any performance; letting one song flow into another is extremely effective to this end, such as the transition from 'Dancing In The Dark' into 'Land Of Hope And Dreams' (for once not introduced by its title) – the most intense and passionate performance I can remember of the latter, sung and played as if there's no tomorrow. Nearly at the end, Bruce creates a pause as if he's back from the 'main set' for an encore, with a final speech, reminding us again of his words in the book on how his promise, his magic trick, is not just about his story, but our story, him and us helping each other together, and uniting us all once again – following his recounting of his career as what he calls a 'long and noisy prayer' – with the recognition that he has come full circle from his childhood in a small town dominated by religion, to a point where (always the Catholic) he is once again 'surrounded by God'. What more fitting conclusion to that 'prayer' than the universal one, the Lord's Prayer, which seems perfectly appropriate in this context, regardless of anyone's creed or beliefs. Only one song can follow that, and that's what 'Born To Run' does, an anthem brought home to its elemental centre, the quest for love. You want to know if love is real? There it is, flowing both ways. The lights go up, Patti re-joins Bruce for a minute or so while they take their final bows together, amid a frenzy of audience camera activity after the strict photographic ban during the show; she walks off, and after a few handshakes with some at the front, Bruce walks off too, and it's over. As the arc of the stories and songs covering Bruce's career completes (for now), there's an unmistakable sense that this is a summary (logically complementing and following on from the autobiography), and like the familiar idea that at the end of things one gets the impression of your life flashing before you – as a long-time fan since 1976, I certainly had the effect of my 'past Bruce life' encompassed in these two-and-something hours. I know others feel the same, and potentially of course it's a sad, distressing idea to think – as we recognise – that something so special and essential has to come to an end sometime… but right now, let's not forget, the story – our combined story - goes on. I never see any point in speculating 'is this the last time?'; far better to focus on making the most of however long this continues. But while the inevitable awaits us all, as Bruce himself often ponders on our mortality, this is another (and a unique one) in a long line of gifts he's given us, a celebration of life, and love, and faith, and hope, and dreams, and reality; all the things that make existence precious and life worth living. I have seen Bruce many, many times, and marvel at how after all this time he has brought us something breathtakingly new and vital out of a collection of – on the face of it - old songs and stories. It's a magnificent feat, and for an old fan like me it feels like a baptism, a renewal, sending me forth to face life with new courage and resolve, living the shared story with my friends and loved ones, looking forward to our next rendezvous further on up the road. Yet again, I have been so fortunate, and am highly conscious of dear friends who would have loved to make it, but for whatever reason couldn't. I hope and pray that as many fans as possible get the chance to do this too. I have seen the past of rock'n'roll, and its name is Bruce Springsteen – on Broadway. |
