Woo……Damn. It is good to be in Philadelphia, I tell you that! There's the King, the King from Philly. It was 1965, in 1965 I was fifteen, and I just started playing guitar. I've been playing for about six month when I heard a knock on my door. It was this good friend of mine George Theiss, he was looking for a guitar player for one of the first bands in Freehold, New Jersey. Woo. I could barely call myself a guitar player at the time, but I did know a few chords and couple of leads. So I followed George to this little house a block from the towns rug mill. And in that little house I embarked on one of the greatest adventures of my live. I joined my first rock 'n roll band. …. And we last for three years. For teenagers that's pretty incredible. We lasted 1965, 1966 and 1867. Now, with these old men, we've been around 50 fu*kin' years. That's right… and we ain't quittin'! We ain't doing no farewell tour bullsh*t! Jesus Christ! No farewell tour for the E Street Band! Hell no. Farewell to what?! Thousands of people screaming your name? Yeah that's it, that's all it takes, I ain't going anywhere! But, 65, 66, 67 were shaky years in America, it was an incredible time to be young, be in a rock band. But if you cut forward fifty years from that first afternoon. It was another summer day and I found myself standing at the side of my… of my old friend George's deathbed. George had been in a rough battle against longcancer, and he had only left a few days to live, and I realised that at George's passing I'd be the last surviving member of that group of guys that got together that afternoon so many long summerss ago. Now as you get older… death brings a certain sort of clarity. It's the lasting gift to us, is this expanding vision of this life itself. And the grief, the grief that we feel when our lovedones leave us. It's, it's just the price that we pay for having lived well! This is "Last Man Standing".
