Bruce Springsteen on Women’s March: ‘The New American Resistance’

“[They] rallied against hate and division and in support of tolerance, inclusion, reproductive rights, civil rights,” singer says at Perth concert

Bruce Springsteen celebrated the Women’s March during his Sunday concert in Perth, Australia, calling the hundreds of thousands who marched in cities across the globe “the new American resistance.”

“We’re a long way from home, and our hearts and spirits are with the hundreds of thousands of women and men that marched yesterday in every city in America, and in Melbourne,” Springsteen told the crowd at Perth Arena; video of the tribute was later posted across his social media.

Springsteen continued, “[They] rallied against hate and division and in support of tolerance, inclusion, reproductive rights, civil rights, racial justice, LGBTQ rights, the environment, wage equality, gender equality, healthcare, and immigrant rights. We stand with you. We are the new American resistance.”

The Perth concert was Springsteen’s first of a 14-date tour of Australia and New Zealand, and the E Street Band’s first concert since September. Thanks to a sign request, the concert also featured Springsteen’s first performance of “Blood Brothers” since 2008 and only its fourth live airing ever, with the audience helping him remember the lyrics:

It was also recently revealed that Springsteen staged a secret solo acoustic concert January 12th at the White House’s East Room for Obama staffers to thank the administration for their work over the past eight years.
