MEET ME IN THE CITY - V9 3:28 RIVER: OUTTAKES

Note: V1 thru V8 are takes from Telegraph Hill rehearsals on March 25, 1979. V8 is listed as "Untitled Song #3" on disc two of 'The Definitive River Outtakes Collection Volume 2'. Working title was "In The City Tonight", also known as "In The City", and titled "Meet Me In The City Tonight" on Springsteen's handwritten lyric sheet. Author Clinton Heylin stated that the music of 'In the City Tonight" was appropriated by "Night Fire", and while they don't sound exactly alike, there are no further recordings of "In the City Tonight", until V9, "Meet Me In The City" was officially released online on October 16, 2015, to accompany the announcement of The Ties That Bind: The River Collection, which was released on December 4, 2015. The inclusion of both Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici in the credits suggests that some of the backing music was recorded during sessions for The River (along with Bruce's count-in), though there is no record in studio logs. The best theory is that it was recorded on June 14, 1979 at the Power Station. but somebody wrote "Do You Want Me To Say Alright", on the tape box. This would explain why "In the City Tonight" is absent from the studio logs, and why Danny and Clarence are in the credits. The lead vocal was recorded in 2015, along with some additional backing music. Included on a Tracks concept compilation in 1993.
