INTO THE FIRE V2 5:04 RISING

Note: "Into The Fire" was the first song Springsteen composed after 9/11; Bruce hoped to debut it at the September 21 'America: A Tribute to Heroes' telethon, but wasn't able to complete it in time. V1 was one of the initial demos that Bruce brought to Atlanta later that fall for his first meeting with Brendan O'Brien; the demo featured less emphasis on the gospel refrain, but O'Brien persuaded Bruce to turn it into the song's chorus. The album version was the first song cut during sessions for The Rising, in late January 2002 at Southern Tracks, Atlanta; the intro was recorded separately from the rest of the song (further overdubs may have been completed later). Soozie Tyrell contributes violin and background vocals, Brendan O'Brien plays hurdy-gurdy and glockenspiel, and Jane Scarpantoni plays cello.
