Little White Lies

LITTLE WHITE LIES - V1 1:07 LM-9
LITTLE WHITE LIES - V2 2:47 ATMF / DROC1 / SYMKB / DBTR
LITTLE WHITE LIES - V3 2:39 RIVER: OUTTAKES

Note: Also known by the titles "White Lies" and "Don’t Do It To Me", all takes in studio logs were under the name "Little White Lies". V1 listed on the 'Lost Masters IX' CD as "Untitled #3", probably because the lyrics had not been written for this demo; recorded at Telegraph Hill in early 1979. V2 is an unofficially released take by Bruce and the E Street Band, cutting loose at the Power Station on June 1, 1979, and circulating in high quality. On the short-list of greatest unreleased tracks for many years, circulated on 'Son You May Kiss the Bride' as "Don't Do It To Me" since the 1980s. The lyrics of "Mary Lou" are drawn upon heavily for this take, and Springsteen would use them again in July to record, ""Be True"". V3 was released in 2015, on the River Outtakes discs, included with the Ties That Bind box set. This indeed is an unreleased take, recorded June 13, 1979, with updated lyrics, replacing the lines from "Mary Lou" with two verses from "Loose Ends", and two original verses. Though many fans and collectors found this exciting, more than one now-paranoid fan was concerned about the new lyrics, and the possibility that these were written and vocals dubbed long after 1979. The lead vocal is definitely the 30-year old powerhouse, but it is harder to confirm "The Little White Lies" refrain at the end of the song, through the double tracked vocal and the dubbed background vocals. That said, based on current information, 1979 Bruce with his 1979 double-tracked vocals and 1979 dubs sounds awful good. I'll bet Max Weinberg knows, because apparently this is one of his personal favorites, and he has expressed his wish that it be released in past interviews. The drums definitely sound like vintage Max '79, too.
