LITTLE WHITE LIES - V3 2:39 RIVER: OUTTAKES

Note: Also known by the titles "White Lies", "To You" and "Don't Do It To Me", but all takes in studio logs were under the name "Little White Lies". V1 is a brief acoustic demo of the guitar riff with bluffed lyrics, recorded at Springsteen's home in early 1979. It is listed on the 'Lost Masters IX' CD as "Untitled #3". V2 is an unreleased take by Bruce and the band, cutting loose at the Power Station, possibly on June 1, 1979, a recording of which circulates in high quality. On the short-list of great unreleased tracks for many years, it was first issued in the 1980s on 'Son You May Kiss the Bride' as "Don't Do It To Me". The lyrics of "Mary Lou" are drawn upon heavily for this take - Bruce recorded takes of "Mary Lou" the same day, and Springsteen would use them again in July to record "To Be True".

V3 was released in 2015 on The River: Outtakes, included in The Ties That Bind: The River Collection box set. This is a different vocal take, probably recorded June 13, 1979 with updated lyrics replacing the lines from "Mary Lou" with four new verses, two of which Springsteen later used in "Loose Ends". The lead vocal is definitely vintage. Springsteen's double 1-2-3-4 count-in has been removed, and the song now has double-track vocals. One of Max Weinberg's personal favorites – Max expressed his wish that it be released, which has since been granted.
