Note: V1 is a very early acoustic demo recorded at Springsteen's house, probably in early 1979. V2–5 are from Telegraph Hill rehearsals in late March 1979. V2 has Springsteen singing harmonies over a Telegraph Hill band rehearsal take. The two full rehearsal takes both have lyrical variations but V4 is closer to the final take, presumably recorded a short time after V3 (which is dated to March 30, 1979 in the liner notes of 'Lost Masters 4'), and lacks the electrifying instrumental outro found on that take. V5 is a short take of just the end of the song. V6, recorded at Power Station on June 13 and July 5, 1979, is officially released on The River: Outtakes, and is an entirely vintage recording. An early handwritten lyric sheet for a song called "Time" has "Man Who Got Away" as a sub-title in brackets, but it is likely there is no relation to this song. Appeared on an early sequence for the fifth album and was included in an archival concept list put together by a Sony engineer in 1993 but bumped off The River by the title track.
