Although legend holds that the famous Nebraska demo tape, recorded on Bruce's Portastudio in his Colts Neck, NJ bedroom, was created all in one day, in fact the listed songs were recorded between December 17, 1981 and January 3, 1982. In total, 14 songs were completed, with between one and six takes each. At this stage, "Nebraska" is titled "Starkweather", "Highway Patrolman" is titled "Deputy", "Open All Night" is titled "Wanda (Open All Night)", and "Losin' Kind" is titled "The Answer" or "Patrolman". The album versions of "Nebraska", "State Trooper", "Open All Night", "Johnny 99", "Highway Patrolman", "Mansion On The Hill", "Atlantic City", "Used Cars" and "Reason To Believe", as well as the Tracks version of "Born In The U.S.A.", the released versions of "Losin' Kind" and "Child Bride", and the Nebraska '82: Nebraska Outtakes versions of "Pink Cadillac" and "Downbound Train", derive from these sessions (overdubs were added to several of the tracks later).
