Suffering from writer's block, Springsteen shared his troubles one December, 1989 evening with his Malibu neighbor Roy Bittan, who played him some music he had been working on. Inspired, Bruce returned to his Benedict Canyon garage studio, wrote some lyrics, and completed the composition of "Roll Of The Dice". Bruce was so excited that he ran into the house and woke up his fiancée Patti Scialfa at 3 a.m. and forced her to listen to the tune.
