Springsteen produces a session (with Toby Scott recording) for Joe Grushecky, with the pair recording full demos for "Chain' Smokin'" and "Never Be Enough Time" before bringing in a group of musicians organized by Bruce that he was utilizing for his own scattered studio sessions of the period: Zack Alford (drums), Leon Pendarvis (keyboards), and Jerome Smith (bass). Originally planned as a "one-off", this session with Grushecky turned out to be the start of a major side project that would ultimately lead to the American Babylon album.
