During March 2001, Springsteen held his first recording sessions with the E Street Band since 1995 at the Hit Factory in New York City. The sessions, produced by Bruce with Jon Landau and Chuck Plotkin, were primarily focused on the new material that had been debuted during the Reunion Tour. It is plausible that "Waitin' On A Sunny Day" (which had been soundchecked in 1999) and "My City Of Ruins" (which had debuted the previous December) could have been attempted as well; Bruce writes in his autobiography that "we headed home with eight things or so basically recorded." The sessions, however, were deemed unsuccessful, and, for the first time since 1975, Bruce decided to bring in an outside producer.
