Sometime during fall 2001, Bruce Springsteen travelled to Atlanta to meet with producer Brendan O'Brien to try out the possibility of working together on the next album. (This followed an initial meeting in New Jersey, where Bruce had played O'Brien some old demos.) At this visit, Bruce played O'Brien his new demos of "Into The Fire" and "You're Missing"; the producer made various recommendations to restructure the latter song, and Bruce laid down a new demo on the spot. O'Brien was embarrassed to later learn from an interview that Bruce was actually irritated by this hands-on approach—but apparently, he wasn't too offended, because he decided to take on O'Brien as the producer for The Rising.
