The main body of sessions for The Rising were held in February and March 2002 at Southern Tracks in Atlanta (the full process spanned about seven-and-a-half weeks). The songs were first recorded by a core group of Springsteen, Garry Tallent, Max Weinberg, and Roy Bittan; everything else was done through overdubs, with various musicians and band members traveling to Atlanta to record their individual parts. "Empty Sky" was the final song cut, some time in March. The entire Rising album, with the exceptions of the base track of "Let's Be Friends (Skin To Skin)", the Asif Ali Khan and group vocals on "Worlds Apart", and the strings on "Countin' On A Miracle", was apparently recorded at these sessions (including those that had taken place in late January), as were the album version of "Down In The Hole", the alternate acoustic version of "Countin' On A Miracle", and what would become the base track for the album version of "Harry's Place".
