Various recording sessions were held for Devils & Dust between March and August 2004. The majority of the albums tracks—possibly all except the title song—used base tracks dating from the '90s; various new parts were overdubbed during these sessions. All parts from Steve Jordan and Brendan O'Brien date from 2004; the dates of most other contributions are uncertain, though all the album's horn and string parts were recorded separately in 2004 and were overdubbed. The liner notes place the album's recording at "Thrill Hill Recording, Los Angeles and New Jersey", with "additional recording at Southern Tracks Recording, Atlanta, GA"; it's uncertain which songs or parts were specifically recorded where, but most like the 2004 sessions comprise the "additional recording" mentioned.

NOTE: Other musicians contributed to the songs worked on during this period, but it's not clear which parts were recorded in 2004 and which date to earlier sessions (or in which studios). All the album's horn and string parts were recorded in 2004 separately, and overdubbed later. The strings were recorded at Masterphonics, Nashville, TN; the horns were recorded at Southern Tracks.
