In late 2004, Bruce revisited the material from the 1997 Seeger Session for potential release and determined that could make a good stand-alone album. He only had six songs, however, so he gathered the same (slightly expanded) group of musicians for this second Seeger Session, which produced nine additional songs. The album versions of "Old Dan Tucker", "Mrs. McGrath", "John Henry", "Pay Me My Money Down", and "Froggie Went A-Courtin'" and the base tracks for the album versions of "O Mary Don't You Weep", "Erie Canal", and "Shenandoah" were recorded at this session.
