Recording sessions for the project that would become Faithless were held intermittently at Springsteen's New Jersey home studio between the end of the Devils & Dust Tour and the release of We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions, producing the base tracks for all the songs released on disc 3 of Tracks II: The Lost Albums except "Let Me Ride" (which dates from 1994) and "My Master's Hand" (which was recorded later, but intended for the same project). This material was written and recorded specifically for the soundtrack of a film, a "spiritual Western" which was never ultimately shot. Springsteen recorded the original demos on his own; various overdubs were completed much later for the material's release on Tracks II.
