Matt O'Ree, a Jersey shore guitarist who would later tour with Bon Jovi, was giving Bruce Springsteen's son guitar lessons when his student asked to hear what O'Ree was working on, later surreptitiously playing it for Bruce. Springsteen praised it the next time he saw O'Ree, who worked up the courage to ask him if he'd like to contribute to the track. Springsteen recorded guitar and vocal overdubs for the song, "Black Boots", in a separate session around late November or early December 2013.
