"Alright….this next song, this is our first single (chuckles) I believe it´s been added to MTV´s (chuckles) ´Total Request Live,´ that´s right (chuckles)….I´ve been telling the folks this is a 150-year-old Bob Dylan song, I think….when you get into the whole….you get into the whole archive of folk lyrics, it´s shocking how many of them were so completely surreal….so people were figuring out how to do drugs even way back then, that´s all I know (chuckles) somebody was….but, uh….this is a great one….are we ready?….let´s get a tempo on (?)….(says off-mike: ´We´re doing, uh, ´Old Dan Tucker´) this is our first audible (chuckles) there are gonna be many more to come…."

"Oh yeah….we found it….we found it….gonna do, uh….woo!….we had to travel through a couple of keys, few minor heart attacks….you´re singing and you´re going: ´I´m singing it, it´s playing,´ but, uh, it´s like having your right shoe on your left foot and your left shoe on your right foot, that´s the best way I could describe it (chuckles) and you gotta walk home from work, you don´t realise you screwed up your shoes but something don´t feel right (chuckles)….almost did it again, alright (chuckles)…. alright….this is what we need, we need to fuck up (chuckles) that´s….I´m glad we´re fucking up (chuckles) better now than later (chuckles)….I was getting worried there for a minute (chuckles) we didn´t have enough fuck-ups over the past three nights…. alright, this is a great song written by Agnes Cunningham and her brother Bill, written about the, uh, Oklahoma dustbowl, she was a dustbowl refugee, founder of Broadside Magazine and, uh….as I say, you know, there´s, uh, you hear this song about the dustbowl, you think it´s just this big bulk piece of American history that affected the generation before you but, uh, the biggest displacement of American citizens has been down in New Orleans, New Orleans lost half its population….so this is, uh, ´Oklahoma Home´…."

Intro to “How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?”
"Thank you….thank you….that´s Frank, Frank Junior on the big bass drum and guitar tonight….back in ´63, the height of the folk boom, I used to go down to Manasquan Beach and, and, uh….in the middle of the summer ´63 there were about 30 or 40 men who would gather on the weekend and sit in a circle and they would play all these folk songs and, and I, like, I think I´d, I´d bought a guitar, I really wasn´t playing it yet and I´d go down and I´d say ´Man, I just wanna sit in that room, sit on the sand with that guitar and, and, uh, strum some chords with these guys one of these days,´ they were like, you know, they were my big heroes at the time and I went over to Frank, Frank, uh, Senior´s and, uh, he was my, he was my cousin, a little bit older than me and, uh, he played accordion….uh….uh, most of his young life that I remember, every time we´d go over, your, your grandma would have Frank pull out the accordion and entertain in the livingroom and it was all sort of Ted Mack-standards and, and I guess he doesn´t play (?) he doesn´t play it any more?….damn, that´s a shame ´cause we got a spot for him in the band….with Charlie getting the keys wrong and everything, you know (?)….(chuckles)(?) but, uh, we have the great Charlie Giordano on keys….but, uh, uh, Frank played the accordion pretty well, then he switched to the guitar and, uh, and, uh….I went over and I was captivated that he´d moved to the guitar and, uh, he kind of had on, I guess, what I would call sort of these beatnik clothes, uh, the main thing of which I remember is he had his t-shirt on backwards….I don´t know if that was a plan or a mistake but I wore my t-shirts backwards for two years after that….and I occasionally do now in his honor, uh (?) (chuckles) but uh….but he really taught me my first chords on the guitar and gave me a book of folk songs and sent me home and showed me where the fingers go (?) and uh…Frank´s been a musician, played for a long time and I´m glad to have him up here so that when I´m up hamming it and shaking my ass, someone can actually play the guitar (chuckles) so, anyway, this is a song originally written by Blind Alfred Reed back in the, uh….uh….I guess it was during, during the Depression, though I´m not sure when it was written, it was written then?….around, yeah? ´round ´31, I think, so, so we´re, uh, heading to New Orleans on Saturday night, we´re excited about going down there and being invited to play….rewrote, rewrote some of the verses in this song, this is called ´How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live?´…"

| Tom Cantillon | This review will cover the past 3 shows at Asbury Park. I went, not knowing what to expect and walked away afterwards, completely impressed and amazed! The concert was one of the most joyous and fun-filled time I'd had at a Bruce show. If you haven't seen the show, the best way to describe it is: Bruce, motivated by the music of Pete Seeger, fueled by the soul of Wilson Pickett, backed by a combo of Bill Hailey and The Comets meets The Brian Setzer Orchestra — the combo is a lethal one. Bruce is definitely having a blast and the show and intensity in which he performs, proves it. Yes, a few people are saying it's not their kind of show, but that does not in any way detract from the professional — giving-his-all — rockabilly, country, swing-time, fun-time show Bruce has given his receptive audience. He's got a great band backing him and he's working them hard. Highlights: The Seeger songs, muscled up by Bruce and the band are intense. Mary Don't You Weep, John Henry, Eye on the Prize and Buffalo Girls are all great. My favs have to be Jacob's Ladder, How Can a Poor Man and When the Saints — just great, great stuff. Who better to tap into that Americana songbook than Bruce? It's a night of hand-clapping gospel, shake-down the rafters singing, jitterbugging, rock 'n' swing music that will have you dancing… unless you have no heart and soul. And the reworking of Cadillac, Open all Night and You Can Look are just wild! Really liked Fall Behind as a waltz — nicely done. Thanks, Bruce, for a chance to witness the birth of something fun and old, new and borrowed and blue. Good luck on the tour. Looking forward to it. |
