Intro to “Radio Nowhere”
“Good evening, guinea pigs (crowd cheers) alright…ok, we had a good time last night, we got our feet up, got the wheels turning a little bit…didn’t fuck too much up…tonight we’re gonna change everything (crowd cheers)…are we ready?…is there anybody alive out there? (crowd cheers)…”
Intro to “Magic”
“Thank you (crowd cheers) alright, here’s the title song of our next record…I got the word “Magic” from, uh…the fact that we’re living in pretty Orwellian times…and uh…times when you can make something that’s a lie seem true and something that’s true can seem like a lie…”Hey, I saw it on TV…that’s John Kerry”…so watch out for that magic…”
Intro to “Night”
“The lovely Miss Patti Scialfa (crowd cheers) gentlemen…prepare yourselves…”
Intro to “Livin’ in the Future”
“Good evening, Asbury Park (crowd cheers) welcome to the world-famous…air-conditioned Convention Hall (crowd cheers) I swear the air-conditioning will become effect…I don’t know when…but someday…everything comes back…this is the first song I wrote for the new record…and it’s a song about…when things…have happened here that we thought could never happen here…how along with all the things that we love about America has…cheeseburgers…hot dogs at the Max’s and the Windmill…the Jersey Shore (crowd cheers) Beachwood Motorcycles…we now have to add to the list: rendition, illegal wiretapping…torture…voter suppression, no right to a lawyer when you’re arrested…those are things that…are not only un-American, they are anti-American and they happened as we’ve been sleeping…”
Intro to “Town Called Heartbreak”
“Oh yes, yes, thank you very much (crowd cheers) oh, it feels good tonight…the band feels good…alright, we got a, we have a work-in-progress right here…I know it’s gonna be good (chuckles)…the work-in-progress is me, unfortunately…(?)…oh, a woman with a guitar is a sexy thing (crowd cheers)(?)…a man with a guitar is a fool (laughs from the crowd)(?)…”
After “Town Called Heartbreak”
“Woo! (crowd cheers) Miss Patti Scialfa…that’s in the record stores right now, ladies and gentlemen (?)…”
Intro to “Devil’s Arcade”
“Here’s a song for Iraqi veterans…”
Intro to “Girls in Their Summer Clothes”
“How are we doing out on the beach?* (crowd cheers) woo!…we’re too tired to walk off and walk back (?)…alright…oh, we’re good now, now we’re good (crowd cheers) that was it…we’re ready to (?)…oh yeah…how are we doing outside? (crowd cheers) alright, a beautiful night out there…here I come…it’s nice and cool in here too (crowd: “Yeah” and laughs) that fall weather, we love that fall weather… alright, this is for everybody out on the beach, “Girls in their summer clothes” (crowd cheers)…”
[*The doors were opened so that the people outside on the beach could listen.]
Intro to “Thundercrack”
“Alright…we’re just getting this one under our belt…this was the first song I wrote, I wrote this before “Rosalita” and…when the band was a five-piece, there was me, Clarence, Danny, Garry, Mad Dog Vincent Lopez, wherever he may be (some cheers) and, uh, we learned this as our first show-stopper ‘cause…nobody noticed, we had to do something weird to let people remember us and (?)…”
Intro to “American Land”
“I wanna thank everybody for coming to our shows here in Asbury Park (crowd cheers)…and, uh, gonna spread your money around, there’s some good folks here helping bring Asbury Park back, to keep it alive (crowd cheers) oh, thanks, everybody out there on the beach…all the folks who have supported us from when we were first here…a lot of great new spots opened up downtown, you should check out Cookman Avenue, go visit Lance and Debbie (crowd cheers) across the street from Wonder Bar…(?)…Clarence was playing at the Wonder Bar (crowd cheers)(?) and he came over to Student Prince, which is the strip club down the street from the Stone Pony, and that’s where we met and formed our life-long friendship…in about twenty minutes…without even speaking (chuckles) oh man (?)…we got some friends of ours here tonight from the Sessions Band who stopped in to see us (crowd cheers)… this man will now play the smallest trumpet ever played, ever played in the world (chuckles)…but uh…oh, thank you for coming out and checking out all our new music (crowd cheers)(?)…we’re, uh…in a very, very important place in American history now so please step up and let your voice be heard…and…let freedom ring…”
After “American Land”
“Goodnight, everybody! (crowd cheers) peace! (crowd cheers)…”

EBG | I didn't have a ticket for the show but decided to go up and sit on the beach to listen. I started off the on the south side of the building where in the past, if they opened the first set of double doors, on the side up on the balcony, you could see part of the stage. It turns out, this time they had the north side opened. I listened to Radio Nowhere, Prove It All Night, Lonesome Day and Gypsy Biker on the south side. In the meantime, every now and then people were heading past me and towards the back of the building, so during Magic, I took a walk over, and discovered that the north side's beach and boardwalk were mobbed with fans. The first set of double doors on the balcony was open. The combo of Night and She's The One was amazing. I was so glad to see She's The One performed because recently, for some reason, I've become completely obsessed with that song, even though I've known it for years. After that, I went up on the boardwalk. The sound wasn't as loud from the boardwalk, but I went back and forth between the boardwalk and beach to get different views of the stage. Darlington County went right into the full band version of Born In The USA. BITUSA was the highlight of the show for me, since even though I've seen Bruce and the E Street Band 15 times, I've only seen him play that song twice before, and one was the acoustic version. Devil's Arcade sounded great, and I like that one the best out of what I've heard of the new stuff. The crowd outside went wild during Badlands, with people all around me pumping their fists up in the air. I've been dying for 4 years since the last time I saw the E Street Band to pump my fist up in the air to Badlands. Bruce acknowledged the people standing outside a bunch of times towards the end of the show, and dedicated Girls In Their Summer clothes to those outside. And of course, Thundercrack and Born To Run were great. Overall, it was a really fun night and a great mix of songs. |
Gary K. | Hot is the word! The band was smokin' as was the temperature inside the intimate confines of Convention Hall. Great show - look forward to more Magic, i.e. Terry's Song and I'll Work for Your Love. Bring on the Tour!!!!! |
Kevin K. | Very good show - great setlist - Bruce can sense the appeal of "Girls in their Summer Clothes" ! The rest of the new songs worked well and were balanced with the classics. Thundercrack is great - hope it can work in a bigger arena ! I thought Clarence looked great !! All said- a very special evening ! |
LR | The show was great but its tough watching Clarence sit as much as he did… He seems to have aged quite a bit and may have had a slight limp as well. |
Lucky One | We want to thank the 2 girls that left early and gave us their stubs, and also have to thank the others that unknowingly caused enough of a distraction to allow us to walk past security and enjoy the best beach party of the summer! |
Nancy N | I was extremely impressed with Patti's new CD and am glad that she is performing "Town Called Heartbreak." A long time Springsteen fan, there is a family connection that the E Street Band exemplifies and I think it is important to his female audience too. This is her best work and yes it is her husband's band. He and Patti show the world that you can have a marriage that survives time, an extremely successful rock and roll career, and a raise your kids in a normal private setting. I find it amazing and even more reason to embrace them. McCartney put his inexperienced and musically untalented wife much to her personal protests on stage and his audiences grew to accept it despite her "lack of musical training." Patti not only has a degree in music, but happens to be a very talented songwriter in my opinion. It is always difficult for women to break into a man's world particularly in a band. Her husband is an American icon and I am sure she realizes that her role on a tour with "his" band has to be that place she has created for herself over the years. However, she kept the homestead raising little Springsteen's while Bruce kept on rocking for all of our sakes and now she deserves to have a "little" spotlight. What is the difference in their performing one of Patti's songs together or the band performing another artist's song which he has done over the years repeatedly? I adore Bruce and every "family" member of the band. Let's look forward to many great times to be had and any offering he chooses to make is fine with me. |
Unknown | I was standing 4 deep right in front of Clarence. It definately takes lots of energy out of him. He rarely pulled out his deep sax (alto sax?) but played while in its holder. it was a practice though. Last tour I thought might be his last. But he is a bit older, and all things considered, we are lucky to have him up there on stage as an integral part of the band. Overall it rocked. and it rocked real hard. Solid transitions, great guitar work by Bruce and Stevie in particular. Max is always amazing and banged on the set harder than any time I've seen him. Can't wait for more. Wish more were these shows. I'm forever spoiled. I felt like we were observers that weren't supposed to be there. |
