Rachabane, Barney

Barney Rachabane (March 2, 1946, Alexandra, Gauteng, South Africa – November 13, 2021) was a South African saxophonist. He was one of the few musicians to remain active during the decline of South African jazz, in the 1970s and '80s. In addition to leading his own group, Rachabane collaborated on a series of Technobush recordings with Hugh Masekela and recorded and toured with Paul Simon. Rachabane rose to the forefront of South African jazz in the 1960s, when he performed in several bands with drummer Early Mabuza and recorded with jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim.
