David Sanborn (July 30, 1945, Tampa, FL – May 12, 2024, Tarrytown, NY) was an American alto saxophonist. Though Sanborn worked in many genres, his solo recordings typically blended jazz with instrumental pop and R&B. He released his first solo album Taking Off in 1975, but began playing the saxophone since before he was in high school. Sanborn also worked extensively as a session musician, notably on David Bowie's Young Americans (1975). From the mid-1980s to 1993, Sanborn was a frequent guest player with The World's Most Dangerous Band, of which he was originally slated to be a full-time member.
