Overview

Magic is the fifteenth studio album by Bruce Springsteen. The album was released by Columbia Records, first on LP on September 25, 2007, with the CD release following on October 2, 2007. It was his first with the E Street Band since The Rising in 2002. The album ranked number two on Rolling Stone's list of the Top 50 Albums of 2007. Upon its announcement, Magic was characterized by Springsteen's manager Jon Landau as a "high energy rock" album, with a "heavy E Street Band" sound. The initial track, "Radio Nowhere", was slated as the album's first single, for release to radio on September 4, 2007; however, it leaked to the Internet on August 22, 2007.

Note: Brendan O'Brien persuaded Bruce to include "Girls In Their Summer Clothes" on the Magic album. Springsteen said that O'Brien "really heard its potential and turned it into a pop diamond." V1b, the 'Winter Mix', features a single-tracked lead vocal, a slightly different mix, and a few other minor differences. It was initially released on January 15, 2008 as part of an iTunes digital EP along with the music video and album version, before the physical release on January 29, 2008. Won the 2009 Grammy for "Best Rock Song".

Note: Written by Springsteen while on the road in 2006 and premiered live as "Gonna Be A Long Walk Home" on November 11, 2006 in London during the Seeger Sessions Tour. This performance included an extra verse that was removed when Springsteen & The E Street Band recorded the song in Atlanta during March–April 2007. Now titled "Long Walk Home", it was released on Magic in October 2007. Issued as a promotional single, and a music video was also released featuring scenes of Springsteen at various Asbury Park landmarks, including Convention Hall. Patrick Warren adds Chamberlin and tack piano.

Note: V1 was recorded in late 2006 in New Jersey. V2 was recorded March 2007 at Southern Tracks studio and released as a single ahead of the album, after it had leaked out the previous week, resulting in several cease and desist letters to radio stations. On August 28, 2007, it was officially released by Sony as a free limited-time download on iTunes, to go with pre-orders of Magic.
