Overview
The Up Escalator is Graham Parker's last record with The Rumour produced by Jimmy Iovine. Although it looked a match, since Iovine had some great sounding records on his name for a.o. Patti Smith, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen, but it did not really work for this record. According to critics, the recording and mix are flat and without any detail, resulting that The Rumour sounds just a bit boring. Despite the sound of the album Parker produced a fair amount of A-list material, including "Endless Night," featuring Bruce Springsteen on backing vocals. After this album Parker would soon part ways with The Rumour.
