Note: Co-written by Bruce Springsteen and Joe Grushecky some time between late 1997 and early 2000, most likely during the same songwriting sessions that produced "Code Of Silence" and "The Wall", with Grushecky providing most of the lyrics and Springsteen doing the rest (though a publishing registration, as well as the initial US Copyright filing on July 21, 2000, erroneously listed the song as a Springsteen-only composition). Springsteen premiered the song live on June 22, 2000; he'd play it five times total with the E Street Band in 2000 and 2003. In 2009, Grushecky & The Houserockers recorded a studio version (V1) for their 2009 album East Carson Street; the primary recording for the session took place in Studio L in Weirton, WV, but Bruce recorded his parts separately as overdubs at Thrill Hill East, Rumson, NJ, with Toby Scott engineering. Springsteen also recorded his own studio version of the track, released in 2025 on the Perfect World disc of Tracks II: The Lost Albums. It's not clear when exactly this version was recorded, though the musician credits (including Tom Morello on guitar) would suggest that some or all of the work occurred sometime in the 2010s.
