22.03.77 Boston, MA, intro to ´It´s My Life´
´´I remember….I remember it was summertime….me and this friend of mine, we used to get his old man´s car and we used to take off at night towards the beach….lived about 20 miles inland, it´d take us about a half hour to get there….we were too young, they wouldn´t let us into bars at the time so we used to park outside on the street, we used to get the bouncers to leave the doors open and we´d sit there on the curb just talking, sitting on the hood of the car listening to the bands that were coming down out of New York City to play down along the coast in the summertime….and we´d sit there….we´d sit there all night long, around 4 o´clock we´d head back home….and I remember always on that ride back home thinking, ´cause my old man, every time….as long as I can remember, since I was….since I was real small, that at 9 o´clock every night he used to shut off all the lights in the house….sit in the kitchen in the dark, smoking a cigarette, drinking beer and my mom, she used to sit in the frontroom with just the tv on….and if you came in and turned the lights on, he´d get real pissed off (?)….I remember I´d be getting out of that car 4 in the morning, he used to lock up the frontdoor so that me and my sister couldn´t come in around the front, so we used to have to pass in the kitchen….I´d be standing there in the driveway looking through, looking through the screen door, I could see the light of his cigarette….I´d slick my hair back real tight so he couldn´t tell how long it was…..try to make it through the kitchen to my room…..every night he´d wait till I thought I had it made and he´d call my name to come back and sit down at the kitchen table….we were sitting there in the dark or sometimes….5 o´clock in the morning, we´d go out in his car….and he´d always drive by, there was this white house on the outside of town (?) rising up past the factories….and we´d sit outside that house, he´d start talking to me…. and we´d head back home….he´d start off easy, just how I was doing, how things was going ….and pretty soon he´d be….asking me where I….where I was getting my money from…. what I thought I was doing with myself….and how he was sitting there every night watching, watching my whole life go to waste in front of him….watching me making nothing of myself ….and we´d start screaming at each other, my mother, she´d end up running in, running in from the frontroom….trying to keep us from fighting with each other, pulling him off me…. and every night I´d end up….pulling away from him, running back outside, back out into the street telling him that someday, someday he was just gonna have to learn to live with it…. because it was life, I was gonna do what I wanted to do….”
